Software testing is a key component in the software development process, and it allows testers to determine and evaluate the state of the program at any given time. Through time, testing has evolved significantly according to technological, methodological shifts as well as user expectations that have followed suit. The Foundation was laid down based on elementary principles and then started evolving into current testing principles.

“The Earth is what we all have in common”

Once in a while, I see bizarre posts on LinkedIn, purportedly by experienced programmers, claiming that testers aren’t needed because unit testing, developer discipline, and, I guess “clean livin’” is enough for any developer to produce bug free code. In their world-view, testers make you weak. I kind of understand the feeling, because I feel […]

When researching my previous article, I stumbled upon an essay by Dave Karpf titled “Two Failure Modes of Emerging Technologies”.
The first failure mode is when the technology is actually successful, finds itself used outside of planned context and that causes a whole swath of unintended consequences. Second – technology fails …

I have enjoyed a lot of ensemble / mob programming, aka teaming, over the years. As a diverse group, including people with different deep skills, backgrounds and experience, we learn faster, work smarter, and vastly reduce our cycle time. So, I was not surprised to have many takeaways from Agile New England’s virtual Software Teaming 2024 conference!
The conference Zoom was a warm, welcoming space. Woody Zuill and Nancy Van Schooenderwoert established a comfortable tone of safety and collaboration. We were all among friends, new and old, sharing experiences.

The Association for Software Testing is crowd-sourcing a book, Navigating the World as a Context-Driven Tester, which aims to provide responses to common questions and statements about testing from a context-driven perspective.
It’s being edited by Lee Hawkins who is posing questions on Twitter, LinkedIn, Mastodon,
Slack, and the AST mailing list and then collating the replies, focusing on practice over
theory.
I’ve decided to contribute by answering briefly, and without a lot of editing or crafting, by
imagining that I’m speak ..read more

Last week I published an internal article to our test team at STELLA Automotive documenting our decision to change how we work. I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to realize:
You can publish blog posts in Confluence
Doing so allows you to capture the context around why decisions are made
Capturing why decisions were made is just as valuable as documenting how a system works or what processes are now. They help others get up to speed faster and provide a way to reflect back on why we did the thing. It also makes it easier to change things later bec ..read more

When you’re working on a contract testing implementation, there are a lot of good resources out there to help you out with the hands-on part of your challenges. For example, if you’re working with Pact, there’s the documentation and a great community on Slack to help you figure out the answer to many of your questions.
However, there’s much more to the implementation of contract testing than just getting the tools to do what you want them to do, and these other aspects are much less often discussed. I was recently asked by a fellow tester if I had a blog post or some other kind of resource tha ..read more
