In 2020s dark Australian mystery thriller The Dry, we were thrown into the bleak aftermath of a vicious crime with only Eric Banas troubled yet determined detective Aaron Falk to lead the way. The film, while more than a little baggy at times, benefited from its confident command of atmosphere, a solid central performance, and a painful conclusion that brought everything together. Now, with its sequel, the goofily titled Force of Nature: The Dry 2, much is the same ..read more

In Mother of the Bride, the new Netflix rom-com starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove, youll get to see a bunch of beautiful people wandering around a resort in Phuket, Thailand and delivering the most painfully inane dialogue youll hear in a movie all year. It's only 90 minutes, but feels much longer. Though directed by Mark Waters, who previously directed the classic comedy Mean Girls, this is a film that feels doomed to die a quick death in the depths of the streaming behemoth. Scribe Robin Bernheim, whose previous writing credits include The Princess Switch movie series, pens what c ..read more

A sign reading youll die for our rhubarb pie is normally a cheeky promise of some good eats. When seen at the remote Arizona gas station and diner in writer-director Francis Galluppi's serviceable if a little scattered feature debut The Last Stop in Yuma County, its a warning that death is on the menu. Many people will roll through, but a good number of them wont be leaving. Playing like an extended riff on everything from the diner scene in Quentin Tarantinos Pulp Fiction to any number of films by the Coen brothers, its a confined little thriller that carves out a distinct place in the genre ..read more

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes marks the tenth film in the Apes franchise, and its truly remarkable that this series has not only thrived over the 55+ years its been around, but has constantly evolved (no pun intended) in such a fascinating fashion. While the original Planet of the Apes understandably gets a lot of attention, its four sequels were ambitious, wild films that continuously pushed the boundaries of what this series could be (including people living within the earth, nuclear bombs, and time travel). The recent reboot trilogy, which included Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn o ..read more

Mind Body Spirit, the feature horror debut by filmmakers Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda, is not the first film this year to feel like its tapping into similar things as Ari Asters Hereditary. However, it is the only one thus far to involve so much yoga alongside its story about familial trauma and how it gets passed down. This could easily sound like a joke, but Mind Body Spirit is a found footage horror that plays things mostly straight beyond a few gags about influencers. This is both a blessing and a curse. The curse is that it never takes things quite far enough to be as sly a reflection o ..read more

Kimo Stamboels influence on Indonesias 2000s-and-beyond horror boom cannot be understated, but Dancing Village: The Curse Begins hardly reflects his talents seen in everything from Macabre to The Queen of Black Magic. Those movies Stamboel co-created alongside Timo Tjahjanto as the Mo Brothers pushed boundaries, whereas Dancing Village: The Curse Begins feels mechanical and studio-safe. That tracks, since Stamboels latest is an adaptation of the novel KKN di Desa Penari written by SimpleMan (based on a viral tweet thread) that also serves as a prequel to 2022s feature film KKN di Desa Penari ..read more

Production company American High has been making a name for itself in the teen comedy space, carving out a niche of films that embody the spirit of beloved John Hughes classics while giving them a modern twist. From Plan B to Crush, theyve put out some real gems that tackle current issues of everything from the morning-after pill to coming out with a blend of raunchy humor and heartwarming moments. Prom Dates fits their brand nicely, and while it doesnt quite reach the heights of its best projects, theres still plenty to love about the simple and sweet yet sometimes stereotypical flick ..read more

Remaking or rebooting a popular movie or series can be a risky move. After all, theres usually some sort of nostalgia attached to the original project, which automatically puts the new version in a harsher light. So, when it was announced that Pretty Little Liars would be getting a new series from the creator of Riverdale, Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, there was naturally some skepticism due to the original series major popularity during its run. But Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin proved to be an excellent companion to the original series, with enough differences to set them apart but similaritie ..read more
