Since 1968 there have only been three guards of morning radio on KDKA.  Current host Larry Richert, the late John Cigna and Jack Bogut.  What brought, Jack Bogut, a mountain west boy to Pittsburgh and kept he and his wife Joni here for more than 50 years? What did he think when he first drove through the Fort Pitt Tunnels. What about the men he worked with and the stories they shared. No one can tell the story better than Story Teller Jack. It was the summer of 1964, 44 years after KDKA Radio first made history as the pioneer broadcast station to the world, that KDKA hired George Barbour, it's first ever African American reporter.  And Mr Barbour was no ordinary reporter either. He had already  been honored as a Golden Quill award recipient while working for the Pittsburgh Courier and went on to be honored again with the same award while working for KDKA.  His crowning achievement was his heroic efforts in covering the March from Selma in 1965 for KDKA which he retold to Lynne Hayes Freeland in a TV interview in 19 ..read more

In the second half of the program, we are joined by by the CEO of the Heinz History Center Andy Masich.  No one tells a story like Andy. And what a wonderful one he tells o ..read more

KDKA Radio over the years has been know for it's right leaning talk show hosts like John Cigna, Fred Honsberger and Mike Pintek, but Mike Romigh was the counter point from the left.  Join us as Mike talks about growing up in Beaver County where he first worked in radio and how he landed a part-time fill-in opportunity and turned it into a full-time show on KDKA.  I had a great time with Mike as we shared stories of growing up listening to the greats on KDKA and dreaming about someday being on the radio and how KDKA was like reaching the pinnacle of a career. In the first half of this show we focus in on the newsroom and feature Barbara Boylan. Barbara covered news for 36 years from 1981 to 2017. During that time she covered the biggest stories like the crash of Flight 427 as well as the ambush murders of three Pittsburgh police officers, and the deaths of two of it's sitting mayors. In the Second half I talk with Greg Jena, who started off as an intern and worked his way up through just about every position you could behind the scenes and off mic to help build on the legacy of KDKA Radio. Greg also worked passionately putting together the 80th an ..read more

I've enjoyed hosting all of these shows but, this one stands out because I remember listening to Roy Fox and the Fox's Den as a teenage.  I caught myself listening to him in this interview like I did back then, in wrapped attention.  Listen for yourself and tell me if at 80 he couldn't get behind a microphone and host a show again. You probably remember Trish Beatty as the delightful voice between songs as she hosted mid-days on KDKA from 1977 until the music stopped playing, when we went all talk in 1992.  She has such great stories to tell, of the people she worked with and where in the world she calls home. I have never heard a more versatile talk show host in my life. You pick the time slot and the format and Rob can host it.  He has an ability to dive into any subject from hard news to lifestyle to sport--throw in cooking, travel, and projects around the house on his weekend magazine show. He does all tha ..read more
