Time for children and teenagers in the UK to go back to school.  Having been Locked down in their homes since March. Whilst some will have had good experiences of distanced learning and enjoyed being at home – at least some of the time – for many they will have missed their friends, forgotten their daily routine and got out of the habit of learning.  Maybe they have been getting up too late and going to bed to late……………………….. Some will feel anxious about going back to school.  Most will feel worried about something or other.  But children are very adaptable and resilient an ..read more

On 23rd March 2020, High View – like the rest of the UK went into Lockdown.  The story of COVID-19 and its effect on the world is familiar to us all.  For us, this meant that we could no longer meet with our patients, supervises, and colleagues face-to-face in either of our clinic locations.  Like the rest of the country, we found ourselves working from home and trying to find ways in which we could continue to deliver the best possible psychological support to all those that we work with.  Our work is based around the importance of talking within the confines of a private ..read more

In March 2020 the UK went into lockdown and our lives changed – at the moment we are still living with the “new normal”.  Many people are hoping to get back to the old normal – but it remains unclear when – if ever this will be possible.  In March I wrote the following story to help children understand what was happening and developed an Acronym B-R-E-A-T-H-E to help children and parents cope through this time. Now many months on – life is still different and the shock of lockdown has passed.  However, many children remain anxious and the acronym can still be helpful.  In f ..read more

Begin by making a new pattern to your day One of the things that school does is it makes life predictable and everyone feels safer if they know what is going to happen next.  Monday to Friday – you go to school, get up at the same time, have lessons on a timetable, clubs, breakfast, lunch, and break time.  Then it’s home time – maybe dinner with the family, some homework and maybe game or TV time – then bedtime – and that has its own routine.  We always know where we are.  Weekends are a bit different but they have a pattern too.  Maybe you stay up a bit later – go to ..read more

Relax! Lots of people are feeling a bit scared and anxious at this time and this makes our bodies tense and uncomfortable.  So it’s important to let them unwind and relax.  Not by gaming – this is something different – but by letting your body be still for a time.  Maybe listening to a story or some music.  Notice every inch of your body and let it unwind and get comfortable.  Maybe you have learned about Mindfulness at school – this is something else you could try – there are lots of good apps out there like – Calm Kids or Breathe Kids to help you to relax if your fee ..read more

Exercise. This is one of the things that can make you feel much better – getting your body moving and having fun.  Maybe you can join one of the celebrities doing workouts on YouTube.  Or go out for a walk or run with mum and dad.  Someone has had the idea of putting bears in windows – so you could go out and do your own live Bear Hunt – talk to your friends and make sure their bears are looking out of the window.  Or look for the Rainbows that people have put up to thank the people working for the NHS.  There is always a bear in my window…………………… But there are lots of ..read more

Accept things and make the most of them.  It’s going to be like this for a while – this is our “New Normal” – so it’s good to find some positive ways to get on with it.  Maybe you could be the person who puts the bears in your window – or colour in some rainbows.  Remember there has never been a time like this before – we are making history – and you could imagine telling people in the future a story about what you did when everyone had to stay indoors because of the Corona Virus.  You could write a story or make a Vlog or keep a diary.  Find new things to do – or do s ..read more

Talk about it.  If anyone is scared or uncomfortable one of the best ways of feeling better is to talk to someone about it – so find an adult you trust and tell them about how you are feeling.  Not all the time – because then it starts to take over – but maybe once a day.  Ask them questions – as it is really helpful to have accurate information – if they don’t know the answers they can go away and find out for you.  If you are worrying – it may be helpful to write your worries down and keep them safely in a box so that you can talk about them later – this means you don’t h ..read more

Have some time doing the things that you enjoy.  Every day should have some fun in it.  Reading, dancing, trampolining, crafts, TV, YouTube and this is where gaming is okay too.  Some time every day having fun is really important for everyone to give them a boost.  Make sure you put that in your time-table.  And of course, keep in touch with the important people in your life who you can’t see in person anymore.  Your friends.  Your grandma and grandpa – and maybe you have grown-up brothers and sisters – talk to them by text and video calling – talking is good ..read more

End every day with something Lovely.  Make bedtime and the end of the day really special.  Maybe this is a time for a talk about the nice things you have done.  Or a time to read a book together with mum or dad.  Or for a cuddle.  Always try to go to sleep thinking about something nice that has happened.  Remember that after a good night’s sleep tomorrow is a brand-new day – and by then you may have new ideas that you can share with all your friends about keeping busy and happy through this time.  Make sure everyone has their bears in the window!  And re ..read more
