Physical destruction of data storage – Things to consider
Architect Security

I was asked recently to provide some thoughts on physical data destruction for an article David Spark (CISOseries.com, Twitter: @dspark, LinkedIn) was working on. Here are my complete musings on the subject: The initial step when considering data destruction is basically the same first step in data protection: Take time to understand what kind of data you’re working with. Policy around data classification is going to dictate certain aspects of how that data must be treated. Is it proprietary source code of your product? An employee’s laptop? A payroll server hard drive with PII? Website b ..read more

What Are My Photos Revealing About Me? You may be accidentally sharing personal information in your photos By: Jon Keegan For years, tech savvy people have known that photos shot on your phone contain lots of information that you may not want revealed. The specific model of phone you use and the precise time and location of where the photo was shot are all saved in the photo’s metadata. This information can be viewed in pretty much any image viewing app and can be used to put you at a specific time and place—which depending on your work, relationships or general desire for privacy, you may no ..read more

If I Go to a Protest, What Kinds of Personal Information Might Police Collect About Me? (And how long can it stick around?) By: Lauren Kirchner On the evening of May 29, New Yorkers went out by the thousands for the first big day of protests following the murder of George Floyd. If they were checking Twitter as they headed out the door, they may have seen a surprising warning issued by Terri Rosenblatt, supervising attorney of the DNA Unit at The Legal Aid Society in New York City: Then, when a Twitter follower asked her about the vulnerability of protesters’ face masks, Rosenblatt answered y ..read more

I’m finally able to share with you my talk from O’Reilly Velocity Con! I was so honored to have been selected to speak at such a prestigious event. A fully packed room and a few good laughs were had. It was a great time — even though the air conditioning AND power were out in my hotel for the first 2 days I was there!!!!! Title: Deepfakes: If anything can be real then nothing is real. Talk recorded at: O’Reilly Velocity Conference 2019 Abstract: “I didn’t say that!” The world will be forever changed by deepfakes. A portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake,” this trend refers to a new AI-assist ..read more

I had a weird idea for a talk…
Architect Security

I just submitted a lightning talk (20 minutes) with the weirdest concept and description. It’s not a lecture and it’s just so totally random. I’ve never seen anyone do anything like it before. I think it could be fun and helpful! Abstract: I literally just start conversations with people I don’t know in the room. Why? To demonstrate some peopleing techniques and show how easy networking and small talk can be. This could go really well or it could all go horribly wrong and be incredibly awkward! Either way, hopefully you will learn something and realize it’s not that hard to make small talk wi ..read more
