How to Build a Feedlot Water Management System
Southern Irrigation
by Breanna
4M ago
Raising Beef The life of a beef cow is usually split into two stages: cow-calf operation and feedlots. During cow-calf operation, cows are bred to give birth to calves. The calves are born around 60-100 lbs and will nurse off of their mother for the next 6 to 8 months. Eventually, the calf will start to graze alongside its mother until it is weaned from milk entirely. At this point, the life of a cow will either be for reproduction or fed for beef consumption.  After 8 months, or until they have reached 600-800 lbs, the majority of cows are transferred to a feedlot. The cows stay here ..read more

Expanding to Serve our Customers in Northern Alberta Southern Irrigation believes that our customers deserve to do business with a company that will supply them with quality products, high inventory, expert advice, and excellent customer service. Our branch in Lethbridge had grown rapidly, and it was becoming difficult to give our customers in northern Alberta the proper amount of service as southern Alberta. Written by Mark Halsall As found in Grainews May 4, 2022 “The efficiency of subsurface irrigation is absolutely unbelievable,” says Vandervalk, who grew winter wheat as his first crop on the 640-acre field in 2021. Even though it was another in a string of dry seasons, he only needed 10 and a half inches of water to irrigate the field. Many of his neighbours, he says, put on 18 inches, “and still fell behind with their central pivot.” “The most important component for me would be is the water going directly to the root system, which is how a plant should be watered. You shouldn’t be waterin ..read more

Key Difference between Lateral Move Irrigation and Centre Pivot Sprinklers, and What to Consider when Buying Lateral move irrigation is a close cousin of the centre pivot, and both options are considered when designing an irrigation system for a large field. The two systems are almost identical in structure and purpose – both are self-propelled, overhead irrigation systems.  The main difference is a centre pivot sprinkler is anchored at one end and rotates around a fixed point, while a lateral move system is not anchored and both ends of the machine move at a constant speed. Lateral m ..read more
