This week I talk about Jagga Jasoos, directed by Anurag Basu and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saurabh Shukla, and Saswata Chatterjee.  Jagga Jasoos is one of the only Indian films that I've ever seen that is a musical in the true sense of the word, as most of the dialogues in the film are actually in song. Narayanan and starring Shane Nigam, Soubin Shahir, Fahadh Faasil, Anna Ben, Mathew Thomas and Sreenath Bhasi   This film is a family drama about four brothers and their dysfunctional relationship. The film tackles complex themes such as toxic masculinity, misogyny, and mental health. We think this film is a masterclass in all aspects of filmmaking, including the direction, acting, writing, production design, music, and cinematography. This week we talk about our first Telugu film: Brochevarevarura, directed by Vivek Athreya and starring Sree Vishnu, Nivetha Thomas, Satyadev, Priyadarshi, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Nivetha Pethuraj. This film is a crime comedy adventure that follows two storylines: one of a young filmmaker narrating his script and one of three friends in a college. This week we talk about Kapoor and Sons, directed by Shakun Batra and starring Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, and Alia Bhatt. This film is a family drama centered around two estranged brothers coming home following a family health emergency. We loved this film for its nuanced depiction of a modern Indian family, and for its top notch performances. This week we talk about Haider, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, and Shraddha Kapoor.   This film is an adaptation of the Shakespearean play Hamlet, set in the backdrop of the Kashmir Conflicts of 1995. We discuss the brilliant performances and direction. We particularly discuss how brilliantly they adapt the story to an Indian background, and discuss individual scenes that we thought were interesting ways of adapting the original story. This week we talk about Vikram Vedha, directed by Pushkar–Gayathri and starring Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi.  We change up our usual discussions of Hindi films for an awesome Tamil film that we both love. Vikram Vedha is a neo-noir gangster thriller that involves a modernization of an old Indian folk tale, Baital Pachisi. We discuss some of the reasons why we loved the film including the performances and direction.
