Influential Automobiles: Drive the Bid Podcast

Some cars just have that certain something that sets the tone for the future. Maybe it’s styling, or the headlight design, or which wheels drive the vehicle. I think the Citroen DS is a great example of this, but so is the 1983 Audi 100. Yet neither of those two cars were discussed by “Jalopy Jeff” Sutton, Derek Sheikhi, and I in the below episode of the Drive the Bid podcast from AutoHunter.com. In fact, when we planned the topic, we allowed a wide berth on what “influential” really means, which is the beauty of how we arrived at the cars we chose. Other discussions include news on the just ..read more

Pick of the Day: 2005 Lotus Elise

If I’m correct, the average American male is 5’9”, the average woman being  5’4”. If you’re taller than the former or simply overweight, it’s possible you may not  fit in a Lotus Elise. The company has had its ups and downs but, during those moments, no one could ever accuse Lotus of following the herd. While the Millennium found Lotus working with other manufacturers in order to survive, its incarnation would have founder Colin Chapman saluting the Elise if he were alive. For that reason, the Pick of the Day is 2005 Lotus Elise listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Tempe ..read more

Emma Peel was the best part of “The Avengers” and I am not referring to the Marvel Universe but rather the British TV series. Diana Rigg was perfectly cast for Emma Peel and, starting in Series 5, she rolled in an early production 1966 Lotus Elan S3 Drophead Coupé (registration number SJH 499D). For classic TV fans and automotive enthusiasts alike, its available for sale by Silverstone Auctions at its Race Retro Classic and Competition Car Sale 2023. Emma Peel and her Lotus Elan (Image courtesy of ABC Television) “The car is often described as an S3-SE but is, in fact, a high-spec standard pre ..read more

I dream of driving the Cannonball Run. I blame my desire to participate in this highly illegal road race on repeated viewing of the Burt Reynold’s movie, The Cannonball Run, as it seemed to be on perpetual repeat on HBO when I was a kid. Bucket-list items based on movies starring Dom DeLuise and Roger Moore seem like a poor choice, but my life is littered with interesting decisions that might not benefit me or anyone. Smoking is one of those decisions; so is rooting for the Arizona Cardinals. 1977 Lotus Eclat However, if I did participate in one, my driving style would not set any unofficial r ..read more

In more news about how the world is ending, Lotus — yes, the lightweight sports car company — has unveiled an SUV called the Eletre. Billed as both the first hypercar-SUV and an all-electric lifestyle vehicle, the Eletre will be available in three trim levels (Eletre, Eletre S and Eletre R) with two EV powertrains (450 kW/603 horsepower or 675 kW/905 horses). In addition, the Eletre will feature Lotus Hyper OS, a new operating system for both driver and passengers. In other words, Lotus has put the Italians and Germans and anyone else on notice: the Eletre R is the word’s fastest dual-motor pu ..read more

Do you know what is the world’s most powerful production car? It’s a Lotus … what? Indeed, that little company that has struggled since the Esprit was rendered obsolete produces the Evija, an all-electric hypercar with almost 2,000 horsepower. If that’s not enough of a selling point, then perhaps you should consider the Evija Fittipaldi for true limited-edition distinction. Truth be told, the Evija has been planned to be limited to 130 units, but people of distinction demand more, and Lotus has delivered the goods with a special model to commemorate 50 years since Emerson Fittipaldi helped Tea ..read more

Sports cars are like a good pair of blue jeans – they never go out of style. Sure, the technologies and stats may change, but dramatically styled vehicles with the power and handling to make the most mundane drives enjoyable and blasting through challenging curves an unforgettable experience have been a constant in the automotive marketplace for decades.
