Negative Players – The New Rage Stephen Morrissey’s opinion on a lot of topics shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Who knows where following his advice in the letter will get you? But he is most certainly right about two things. First of all, yes, meat is murder, and there’s no getting around that fact, no matter how much you like to stuff your face with Spanish Jamon. Secondly, yes, the news merchants conspire to keep you scared.  It’s a new industry of terrorism, and, for the most part, we play a role in founding it. The ones busily working on it are journalists dedicated to the art of creati ..read more

VANDALISBIN – Bottle of Wisdom I just watched the Bon Jovi documentary. Well, I watched the first five minutes, ran to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, and never came back. I think I’ve seen enough to review it. And I certainly saw enough of it to think it was kinda sad. It’s not just the part about him losing his voice. Mr. Bon Jovi not being able to hit the high notes on “Livin’ On a Prayer” is fairly distressing, but the thousands of cover bands doing the song in bars might be enough to compensate.  What was really distressing is how the singer described finding himself. He didn’t do i ..read more

Bury Mia – Am I Ken Enough? There’s no reason to lock yourself up entirely from pop culture. Sure, subcultures may be designed to make you feel secure and make you believe that your opinions are better than those shared by many. But, believe me, pop culture will have a way of reaching out and influencing you. The quicker you learn to recognize it, the easier it’ll be to pick and choose wisely.  Just like 1990s pop punk became a topic with which millions were familiar, whether they sought it out or not, the same can be said about “Barbie” and other modern blockbusters. It may not have done ..read more

Mayflower Madame – Paint It All in Blue Music is a great way to focus on things and pinpoint problems. It doesn’t even matter when the things being put into focus are terrible, saddening, or grotesque. In fact, it helps. Life happens to be much less predictable and tends to throw all matters of horror at you or other innocent bystanders without so much as a warning. Isolating these scarecrows of the mind through art can be a wonderful thing.  In many ways, this is the starting point for goth-rock and post-punk. The costumes come later and only add a layer of theatricality. Yes, goth rock ..read more

Meimuna – tomber de haut If you’re walking down a very crowded street, stop suddenly and start staring intensely at an object in the distance; everyone who will notice you will stare in the same direction. Many will stop. Some will ask others what you are looking at. And some will even ask you.  There’s no way, regardless of who you are or where you are from, to get that trick to fail. Congratulations! You’ve just influenced a large group of people. Of course, you haven’t enriched or harmed their lives in any significant way. But now that you know how that works, you could do it.  Po ..read more

Miserable chillers – Eloise Not everyone who fell in love with The Beatles dreamed of becoming globally successful rockstars offered the world’s riches on a silver platter. Sure, most of them did. But some of the best Beatles followers fell in love with the melodies and arrangements and wished that they could create their own. Some of the first DYI artists of importance in the world of pop-rock were among this crowd.  Raspberries, Emit Rhodes, or The Pretty Things didn’t achieve the success they deserved. Harry Nilsson or Badfinger couldn’t sustain theirs despite the endorsement of the ac ..read more

Soft Self Portraits – Departures John Lennon write a few hundred songs before he came to the realization that every single one was about him in some way. In fact, the more he tried to fight, the more ego-driven the songs became. So, he stopped fighting in.  Every good songwriter seems to do that. On the other hand, you will, for example, be able to find heavy metal bands that write exclusively about fighting dragons, going to war, or facing their friends in a session of Dungeons & Dragons.  It’s not just that they are hacks. The problem is that these kinds of songwriters and thei ..read more

Colton Cerny – The Fist Fighter The world’s a safer place for many but also a much less truthful place. People won’t admit their feelings for each other, especially when revealing their thoughts, which would mean having to tell someone else just how much they hate them.  We’re all civilized, and our rockstars reflect that. They hold sermons on stage about how we ought to all get along. Then, like the hobbit-looking Antifa fella in Anti-Flag, they are forced to run off to a foreign country.  People in rock bands used to be damn stupid. They used to kick the butts of other band members ..read more

Flashlight Faces – Things That Walked You used to be able to look at many rock musicians and imagine all of the crazy things that they must have done before settling on this career. And nice, cute-crazy, either. The majority of them looked, walked, and talked like people who got thrown out of the circus. You wouldn’t have been surprised to hear they did time or ran away from some kind of weird experiment conducted by the army.   Those freaks turned rock ‘n roll into something of a Golden Era. You now look upon the few young rock stars that we have, and it’s hard to imagine anything l ..read more

VIDA – In Absence Music fans and critics use genre names so often that it’s easy to forget what some of those bands actually do. Is it enough to belong to a genre, or do you need to be good too? Is it enough to belong to a genre, or do you have to really show up as well?  Most of the bands that have broken the lock to glorious success are bored of all of their good fortune. They certainly sound like it. The groups who have managed to get their show in front of thousands and thousands of people reduce themselves to being human jukeboxes.  Listen, without that, the music business might ..read more
