Mold – Another Four Letter Word
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog

We see mold on outdoor cushions, Persian rugs, commodity tufted area rugs, on indoor furniture that has been in storage, as well as on carpeting that has been over-wet during a cleaning or flooded. We see our fair share of it so it only makes sense that we are always up to speed on our mold knowledge and education. Molds are very common in both residential and commercial spaces. Mold thrives in places with a lot of moisture – leaky roofs, windows and pipes and residue from flooding are all places where it will start. It grows the best on wood products (paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wallpap ..read more

Cleaning old Carpet and the Lifespan of Carpeting
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog

You’ve all seen the magical images of before and after carpet cleaning that transforms a carpet seemingly to brand new. It’s not a myth, but it doesn’t happen every time. Mother Nature’s Cleaning can transform carpets like magic – especially when they are high end quality carpeting and 5 years young or younger. We can remove stains easily because newer synthetic carpet still carries the original Teflon based carpet protection (now illegal in CA) that was applied by the manufacturer. Newer synthetic fibers are unbroken, strong and naturally soil resistant. When synthetic carpeting starts to ag ..read more

The Importance of Maintaining your Leather
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog

I have been studying, practicing and teaching leather care and restoration for seven years. Today I spent some time on a presentation that I did a couple years ago for our technicians. I was updating some pictures and I was scouring the internet for comparable images. I am always taken aback by the advice that I have seen people posting about how to take care of leather – the junk and misinformation available online is scary for most professionals! The posts I was reading reminded me of a call that we got a couple of weeks ago from a customer who had an ink mark on her sofa. People often call ..read more

Painful day of Discrimination and Cancellations

Tuesday was a rough day for the team. I feel compelled to post about it because we all felt the pain. When you work in the service industry, you gain a very high respect for the time of others, and you honor your commitments with other providers. When people flake on a scheduled appointment, even a minimum job means hundreds of dollars lost to the provider. And there is no way to recover from the lost revenue.  It’s usually not possible to schedule another job during the time reserved for that customer. The technician doesn’t make money for that time and often has to sit around for a fe ..read more

Not Clean Enough – We made a mistake!

We just got a call from a customer, Laurie, whose carpets we cleaned a couple of days ago. Laurie was actually very happy with the cleaning and loved our technician, but she had an area by the sliding door that had a stain that appeared worse after the cleaning. This is the picture they sent:   An experienced cleaner can see way more dirt than the average person, so it is not a huge surprise when we get a callback or two with a new guy in the field. Our senior technicians recognize dirt over a shadow – they see dirt where us plain folk cannot. When presented with this photo, my Master Tex ..read more

The Sticky Truth about Glued Down Carpeting
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog

Today was one we don’t see every day, but we see it occasionally – mostly in commercial jobs, but those are usually a little different. Our Senior tech went to what he expected to be a standard cleaning. Six rooms and a set of stairs. The hidden gem was the carpeted basement. He snapped some photos and sent it to the team. This was a full piece of wall to wall carpeting that had been glued directly to the concrete. Remembering back in 2016 when we moved to our new space in San Rafael, we had this carpeting in our office and it was gross. I will tell you why later. For our Senior Tech, this wa ..read more

Cleaning Grass – Sisal, Jute, Seagrass and Hemp Rugs and Carpeting
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog

We see a moderate amount of grass type rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting. We also see a lot of posts promoting them as an easy to clean and sustainable option, both concepts which we support heavily, but the latter about which we raise an eyebrow. While wading through all of the AI generated posts about sisal and jute and all these other fibers – and giving myself a splitting headache – I decided that I would take a more outlined approach to this blog post. Below is a list explaining each of the different types of fibers, what they are made from, the pros and cons, and a link to some cleaning ti ..read more

How to Clean a Jute Rug

Yesterday Adrienne took a call from a customer who has a water stain on a Jute Rug. I swear, every call gives me an idea for a blog post. Jute rugs are not a hot trend right now, but they are a timeless and stylish rug that we see often. Jute rugs are made from an Asian grass. They take the center of the stalk, spin it into fiber, bundle and soak it to soften the tissues of the plant fiber. They are a relatively soft rug compared to other grass rugs, and they are pretty durable – your rugs will actually come back from Mother Nature’s Cleaning rolled and tied with jute because we refuse to use ..read more

Viscose still trending. Why we hate it.

Hate is a strong word, but this fiber earns it. Back in 2019 I wrote a blog post about viscose rugs. It remains one of our most visited posts to this day. Why is that? Of course I can only speculate, but when you are dealing with a fiber that turns yellow when exposed to moisture, and there is moisture EVERYWHERE, it would make sense that there are a lot of rugs out there turning yellow for “no apparent reason” since people aren’t informed about the reality of viscose. It is a fiber made from paper that has undergone a TOXIC chemical treatment to make it shine. You can learn more about viscose ..read more

Water as a cleanser?
Mother Natures Cleaning Blog
by Andrea Varnai

Today I had a call from a customer who spilled wine on their carpet last night and he wanted to know what to do. Way back, when I was in a training for upholstery cleaning, something the instructor said resonated with me and has stuck with me ever since. Water is a chemical, we all know this. But also what we don’t realize is that water is a surprisingly good cleanser. The other thing he said that I will never forget is first in, first out. People call Mother Nature’s Cleaning all the time because they spilled something on their carpeting or on their upholstery and they want to know what to do ..read more
