If one is seeking a single for the Early Pick 4 or Pick 5, one could do a lot worse than I’m a Sure thing (6-5). And the thinking is that support for Dark Pool (7-5), for Mike Maker and Irad, will provide bettable odds for his fans, especially sequential-pool players. Not only does he own the best Thoro Graph figure at this trip over the close second choice, but it come on this course a well spaced 38 days ago. Christophe Clement and Tyler G add to the appeal. I’m a Sure Thing has never run poorly in Hallandale, never out of the money with a pair of seconds and thirds. His best effort was his ..read more

Even though today’s finale appears highly competitive on paper, looks can be deceiving. Take early line favorite Lou the Body (3-1) for instance. For openers, he beat $30 maidens at 7-1/2 furlongs in New Orleans, beating tougher non-winners in his grass debut than the locals had in their maiden scores. His next starts was a better-than-looked fourth when protected in an optional $50K route, beaten 7-1/2 lengths when returning on short rest. Well, he’s two-months a fresh gelding going into this one and should handle this field of $20K turfers and makes his local debut for Larry Rivelli and turf ..read more

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL, February 20, 2024 – A refresher for non-Kentucky Derby regulars – if such an animal even exists: The prep schedule is in its “Championship Season,” where victory virtually assures a spot in the 20-horse gate. Resultingly, Risen Star winner Sierra Leone, the individual leader in the Futures-4 pool at 6-1, has his slip assured at Louisville MAY 4, beating the deepest prep field to date, a race so wide open many handicappers could only guess which would go favorite among several contenders. No such confusion in Saturday’s $1.25 million Grade 2 Rebel Stakes, which marks the s ..read more

HIP, HIP, HIP HOORAY FOR COMPUTER-ASSISTED WAGERING, PART 1: A CONTRARIAN VIEW

By Dr. Carlo Zuccoli, Racing Consultant — From time to time I read, especially in American on–line magazines, long articles about CAW (Computer Assisted Wagering). I totally disagree with those contents. I will try to be as clear and as simple as possible, but this matter, which involves betting on a Totalisator, is overly complicated and difficult to explain and to understand. I will do my best. Please note that a Totalisator to work in the best possible way needs five pillars: 1) the Totalisator, the racecourse and the TV must be in the ownership of one company and / or of parental companies ..read more

KAKALEY HAD RECORD 2023
Horse Race Insider

By Ken Weingartner, USTA A number of good things — with an emphasis on numbers — happened for Matt Kakaley in 2023. Kakaley won a career-high 561 races last year, surpassed 6,000 lifetime victories, and captured his second consecutive driving title at Mohegan Pennsylvania’s Pocono Downs. He also topped $9 million in purses for a second consecutive season (missing his career high by less than $250,000) and reached $100 million in lifetime purses, with the 35-year-old becoming at the time the third-youngest driver to hit the century mark. Furthermore, Kakaley won nine of 10 races at MGM Yonkers ..read more

Trip notes on Zhu Daddy (6-1) from today’s maiden claimer on turf in the fifth event: TAMPA 112223 ANGLED OUT AND FINISHED STRONG 5-WIDE TOO LATE vs SLIGHT INSIDE SPEED BIAS. This will be his last chance on the list is our method demands playing a H-to-W back three times or sooner if it wins. Today is start #3. This betting system has produced a profit since its inception four decades ago. In addition to the trip, the gelded three-year-old makes its second start for turf ace Monica McGoey who has a positive $2.97 strike rate despite a win rate of 7 percent, showing improvement in his first sta ..read more

The first of two Horses to Watch today, one from South Florida, the other from up north. Here are our trip notes from today’s seventh race on Foreseen (10-1): “WENT WELL IN KD TURF DEBUT, RACING IN SPOTS, PREP-LOOKING TRY’ — THEN FROM LST IN SLOP, 7 wide E, LATE LEAD CHANGE GREEN 1/16 PO, FINISHED WELL FOR 3RD ON OWN, READY NOW.” Subsequently at Turfway came what looked to be a conditioner on the Tapeta, now back to the main track, where he earned his personal best performance figure. Note that trainer Rusty Arnold has a positive $2.14 ROI over the last three months with a 9-percent strike rat ..read more

The fact that recent winner Estilo Magico (6-1) is moving up in class certifies that the gelded 4-year-old has a chance to provide value given the early line quote. While not as fast as these, the colt is forward off an excellent season’s debut winning by four dominating lengths in his return from a nine month layoffs. Five weeks is sufficient recovery time. Also note that he is a Horse for Course, with a (4) 2-2-0 slate and a perfect 2-for-2 at today’s trip. Trainer Juan Arrigada has been hot the last three months, winning at a 24% clip and 22% effective when giving a leg up to Jose Batista ..read more

It appears Saffie Joseph has a notion to take down the lioness’ share of the featured G3 Royal Delta which concludes the Saturday action in Hallandale, having entered four in the 1-1/16 miles event. Of those, Libban (10-1) has caught our eye. Her outside draw notwithstanding, she has many variables in her favor. For one thing, she has never taken a backward step in five career starts, going her best work since going long, showing incremental improvement in those three starts. Her season’s, stakes, and two-turn debut came in Tampa’s Wayward Lass five weeks ago, in which she sett a pressured pac ..read more
