Let’s Talk About Saving Faith

We’ve made it through the first few chapters of Romans, and now we know both the bad news and the good news. Sin separates us from God and destines us for wrath, but righteousness is available through faith in Christ for all who believe. Faith is the key, but what does that look like? How can we have the kind of faith that makes God’s gracious salvation a reality? What is saving faith? Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of people who have had saving faith. People who trusted God with the outcome no matter what the circumstances looked like. One of these people was Abraham. Abraham w ..read more

When Life Kind Of Stinks

I’m taking a brief break from my Romans deep dive to share some practical advice from the Word of God on how not to fall apart when life kind of stinks. My husband recently had a health scare that led to more discoveries and we’re going on day five of his hospital stay. He is doing okay right now, and it is incredible how God has had His hand on all of this. We are thankful, hopeful, and eager to get to the other side of this, but it’s scary, and we’re tired. The other day in my journal I wrote: “I’m physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.” As soon as I put a period at the end of that s ..read more

Finally Some Good News!

If you’ve stuck with me up to this point, you’re probably ready to hear some Good News. I know I am! Paul has preached some hard truths so far. The human race is evil and sin reigns in our hearts and minds. God hates sin, and He will judge it. There is nothing we can do on our own to fix the problem. If you close the book of Romans too early, you’ll be overwhelmed by the dreadful bad news and miss the glorious Good News. Keep reading! But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteou ..read more

We Are a Hot Mess

We’ve dealt with some pretty harsh realities in the first few chapters of Romans. Since the first sin in the Garden of Eden, humanity has been a hot mess on a crash course with the wrath of God. No one has gotten it right! Throughout history, we’ve been convinced that if we check the right boxes God will cut us some slack. But all along we’ve been in desperate need of an intervention. Paul has one more point to make about our hopeless condition before he reveals the glorious rescue plan. There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. Al ..read more

Religious Rituals – Because We’re Saved, Not How We’re Saved!

The original readers of the letter to the Romans were both Jews and Greeks who had come to faith in Jesus Christ. Many of the Jews across the region still clung to the idea that the Law of God and the rite of circumcision passed down from their forefathers put them on a higher plane with God than the pagans who shared their Christian faith. They depended on religious rituals and outward signs to make them right before God, but Paul made it clear it is faith alone that makes you righteous in God’s eyes. Whoever you are, it is always faith alone through grace alone in Christ alone. And true circ ..read more

No One is Without Excuse

In Romans 1, when Paul confronted the stuff we’d rather not talk about and laid out the litany of sinful lifestyles people who deny God get caught up in, he knew there were some in the crowd with puffed chests and raised chins. He knew people were looking around at others and shaking their heads. Whispering to the person next to them, “I’m glad I’m not like those people.” But no one is without excuse, and Paul knew that type of thinking was just as dangerous to their souls as flaunting a sinful lifestyle. “You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excu ..read more

Stuff We’d Rather Not Talk About

Don’t tune out, yet. I know we’re talking about things that make us squirm, but we can’t skip over the parts of the Bible that make us uncomfortable. Romans 1:24-32 is one of those passages. We don’t hear many sermons on it or see many pithy social media posts about it. It’s the stuff we’d rather not talk about. To be perfectly honest, I’d rather not write about it either. But it’s God’s word, so here we go. Chances are pretty good you know someone who is living a homosexual lifestyle. Our culture has normalized it to the point that even many churches have welcomed this particular sin with ope ..read more

The Uncomfortable Reality of the Wrath of God

Paul wants to get the hard stuff out of the way right up front, so he begins with the never-popular subject of the wrath of God. People don’t like to talk about God’s wrath. It’s scary and uncomfortable. So instead, we just talk about God’s love. Don’t get me wrong. God’s love is amazing. It is unfailing and everlasting and long-suffering. God is love! He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to endure His wrath in our place. On the cross, both God’s wrath and God’s love were displayed in one merciful moment! But God’s love does not cancel out His holiness, and His holiness is incompatible with ..read more

God’s Gospel: The Power to Save

Romans 1:1-17 Paul was eager to get to Rome to encourage the Roman believers and be encouraged by them. Even in the face of opposition and persecution, the report of their faith had spread far and wide. So, while he waited for the opportunity to meet them face to face, he sent them a letter. Little did he know that he would get to Rome one day, but it would be in chains. Paul was on mission for Jesus. He had been sent out to proclaim the Good News of the gospel, God’s rescue plan all along. He would never forget his encounter with the risen Lord on the road to Damascus over twenty years ago. Romans: The Foundations of our Faith

“God has richly blessed those who have devoted themselves to the study of this book.” R.C. Sproul The book of Romans was written in approximately 57 A.D. by the Apostle Paul to the Christians in Rome. It includes doctrine and duty, theology and practice, and understanding and application. It tells how God revealed His righteousness to the world and how Christ’s followers should live because of it. Rome was the capital and most important city in the Roman Empire. It was the center of politics and government, and although it was filled with magnificent buildings, many of the Roman people lived ..read more
