Taking greyhound to the park

Hi!  Apologies if this isn't the right spot for this post - but any help would be greatly appreciated!  We're thinking of adopting a Greyhound, and I understand that we should probably let him/her off leash unless we're in a fenced in area. But what would you do if you were going to the park (reguler park, not dog park) to sit on a blanket and read a book? Would you hold the leash the whole time? This might be a silly question, but I'm terrified of accidentally letting this *currently hypothetical* greyhound runaway and get hurt. So I guess a follow up question is, how aggressively w ..read more

I have a similar problem to lazySuzie. A greyhound that wont walk. I have to put her in the car and drive her out of town. She is eager to get her harness on and start the walk but as soon as she sees another dog or person she will turn around and go the other way. I have tried to make her stay where she is until the other dog has passed but she just stands behind me crying and faces the other way.  Sometimes we may see a kangaroo or rabbit while on our walk and she is fine with them, looking but otherwise taking no notice. Its only dogs and other people that bother her. She enjoys her wa ..read more

Greyhound puppy aggression - reasons?

Hi all, looking for advice from people who have experience with greyhounds, obviously. I have a 5.5 month old greyhound pup, adopted from a breeder at 8 weeks. She’s been exhibiting some aggressive behavior and I really want to understand the reasoning behind it. We started working with a trainer on it when she was around 3 months, shortly after she started exhibiting the behavior but I’m not sure how much his advice is helping- more on that later.    she is a very sweet dog most of the time but she has moments of aggression sometimes. For example, at night I’ll usually hang out on t ..read more

Frozen Kong Muzzle?

I'd like to start testing leaving my 4yo grey outside of the crate while I'm out of the house. She's usually fine in the crate but every once in a while she'll freak out a little.  I know I'll need to muzzle her because she's quite the scavenger but then she can't eat a frozen Kong or bully stick while I'm gone. Has anyone frozen meat patte in the muzzle with our without the stool guard while their grey is home alone with success? Seems like a good option even though she'd probably finish it in 10min. She could definitely eat a bully stick through the muzzle but that feels dangerous while ..read more

My wife and I got our grey almost 3 months ago now. He's a really sweet and awesome dog and we love him a lot. However, he just won't budge at all on separation anxiety. Here are the things we've tried:   - Hiring a behaviorist (almost $1000) dollars to help - CBD - Thundershirt - An old fan for white noise - Playing soothing music - Leaving him in or out of the crate for alone training - Adaptil - Rescue Remedy - The entire "pick up your keys, don't act excited when you come in/leave" training and all its variations - Rearranging an entire room to put his crate in there for a more den li ..read more

This is an introduction of sorts as well as a question about behaviour. Meet Ami, a 5 year old moohound boy…   Ami lived in a home for a year but was returned for biting his owner. It seems that she allowed him on the furniture and her bed, and had a habit of trying to cuddle him and ultimately she ended up being bitten on the bottom. It was implied that he had landed in the wrong home, and the owner was very angry about the defective dog she’d been supplied with. So he’s back at the rescue. The longer he’s been in kennels, the more shut down he has become. They’ve taken him into their ..read more

We adopted our gorgeous boy (3 years old) about 2 weeks ago. He has never been in a home before and we don't know much about his history except that he's had no injuries. From day one he loved going for walks, he would trot up to us when we got our coat/shoes on, wagging his tail and could barely contain himself when we got his collar/lead/muzzle/ coat on.  All of a sudden a few days ago he started to stop on his walks, he would start walking and then halfway down the road he would just stop. He'd only start walking again if we went back towards home. He would stop to sniff which we let h ..read more

Gnaw-resistant leash

We have a 9-month old whippet who gnaws on anything and everything. Her current favorite chew toy is her leash. Before she destroys it, I am looking to replace it with a leash that may be more gnaw-resistant than her current webbed one. She is 26 pounds and we are using a 5/8 wide leash. Bonus points for traffic handle, lobster clasp, and adjustable wrist loop. I realize this is the unicorn of leashes but it doesn’t hurt to ask!  Thanks.  ..read more

Hi  I’m new to greytalk and I have searched on the training and behaviour section but can’t seem to find other posts.  My girl raced untill 4, then came to stay with me. I have had her just over 1 year. she was with 3 of her litter while they looked for homes.  when she first came,   I was so surprised she settled in really  quickly and she was really fond of my other dog  from the start ( male whippet 3). She has a strong personality compared to other greys I know. She is petite but not gentle with other dogs. She’s can be a wee bit of a bully to my friends grood ..read more
