Improvement requires growth, and growth requires taking risks and making mistakes. That last part—that’s the part we don’t like. We want improvement without the ugly stuff. We want improvement without the risk of failure and looking foolish. But we can’t have one without the other.
Listen to a discussion of the importance of mistakes and failure on our path to self-improvement. You can watch the video version on YouTube, or listen to the audio version below. Thanks for listening!

If you want to get better at something (for example, karate) you need to keep two things in mind:
Progress happens when we put in enough effort on a consistent basis over a long period of time.
If something isn’t working, we should change it.
The tricky part is figuring out which of these to focus on when our progress stalls. When we stagnate, in other words, should we focus on putting in more time, effort, or consistency, or should we change the program entirely?
Listen to my take on this in my latest YouTube video. And feel free to add your thoughts in the Comments section below. Th ..read more

British Columbia is currently under a state of emergency due to unprecedented wildfires. This has quickly become the worst wildfire season in the history of our province. Many people have lost their homes, the air quality is horrific, and citizens are existing in a limbo of fear and uncertainty.
My heart goes out to all those affected by the wildfires, and all those who have lost or are at risk of losing homes and/or loved ones. The situation is truly terrible, and I find myself holding my breath while frequently checking for news updates online.

Why is it so easy to create some habits but so tough to create others?
The typical advice out there—practise something consistently over a certain period of time, such as 21 days—doesn’t always work. And when this seemingly reasonable formula doesn’t work for us, it can be incredibly demoralizing. It turns out that there’s an important piece missing, a piece that can make the whole process of habit-building so much easier.
Listen to a discussion of the quickest way to build healthy habits here. You can watch the video version on YouTube, or listen to the audio version below. Thanks for li ..read more

You don’t have to be an expert to have something valuable to teach or say.
You don’t need to have a perfect life to have a story worth sharing.
And yet… we live in this curated world, this filtered feed. The online world is full of façade and illusion. We can’t help but compare ourselves to what we see online. We have this voice in our heads that says we don’t measure up. That we’re not good enough. And when we look at what is favoured in the online feed—the gold medals, the perfect kicks, the ideal bodies—no wonder we feel this way.
We feel we need to be better than we are in order to ev ..read more

The best way to overcome a lack of motivation and the resulting inertia is to break a project down into small actions. This has been of tremendous value to me in all aspects of my life and martial arts training.
But this tactic does have a caveat. If we keep our actions TOO small, that feeling of overwhelm can actually become WORSE.
Watch my latest video to find out why.

Every martial artist knows that consistency is what gets results. If you want to kick ass at martial arts, you need to put in the reps on a consistent basis. And the more consistent the better. But what people don’t talk about is the downside of consistency: that point at which your routine becomes a prison.
If consistency is needed to get results, how can it be a bad thing? It all comes down to mindset.
Listen to a discussion of the downside of consistency here. You can watch the video version on YouTube, or listen to the audio version below. Thanks for listening!
