The Vancouver Canucks fired Bruce Boudreau on Sunday after a long song and dance that left the former Capitals bench boss the most sympathetic figure in the NHL. The Canucks announced the hiring of Rick Tocchet, who reportedly had to give four weeks’ notice to TNT to get out of his TV analyst deal. Boudreau, who is one of the best personalities in hockey, was cheered and revered by Canucks fans as he was pushed out the door by Canucks brass. Boudreau ended his tenure with the second-best points percentage in Canucks’ history (50-39-13; .554%). The Canucks are paying for their mismanagement in ..read more

On Sunday, after months of anticipation, the Vancouver Canucks finally announced that they have fired head coach Bruce Boudreau. The Canucks have named Rick Tocchet their new head coach. Boudreau, 68, held a 50-40-13 record in his two years with Vancouver. Boudreau becomes the first NHL coach fired this season. The Canucks have been bad in 2022-23. They sit in sixth place in the Pacific Division and sport the worst penalty kill in the league. Despite their struggles, on October 28 Boudreau became the second fastest coach in NHL history to win 600 games. Rumors that the team would eventually fi ..read more

The Vancouver Canucks fell to the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Saturday, but the team and its coach left the ice to a deafening cheer at Rogers Place. Bruce Boudreau, who reportedly was coaching his final game behind the bench, was serenaded with a “Bruce, there it is!” chant as time expired. Boudreau could be seen tearing up as he stood there, taking it all in. After the buzzer sounds, the Vancouver crowd and players salute an emotional Bruce Boudreau pic.twitter.com/TtvT8pAkO2 — B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) January 22, 2023 Boudreau applauded the fans and pointed to them before eventually exiting ..read more

Despite being one of the kindest and most accomplished coaches in the game, Bruce Boudreau is being humiliated on his apparent way out the door in Vancouver. Canucks general manager Jim Rutherford said Boudreau is the team’s coach “for now” as reports run rampant that Vancouver is waiting for Rick Tocchet to be released from his contract with TNT. “I’d be a fool not to say that I don’t know what’s going on,” Boudreau said teary-eyed after the team’s morning skate. During Friday’s home game against the Colorado Avalanche, Canucks fans showed appreciation to their beloved and embattled head coac ..read more

The Vancouver Canucks are unlikely to make the playoffs as their 18-23-3 record has them 12 points out of a playoff spot and eight points from the cellar of the Pacific Division. For a team that was expected to be involved in the playoff conversation, the Canucks’ performance has been as surprising as it’s been dismal. Big changes are likely coming. And one of those changes appears to be happening in slow motion with head coach Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau’s future firing has seemingly already been decided by the team, but they are keeping him in limbo as their bench boss for the time being. Boudr ..read more

The Vancouver Canucks are really bad this season. Sporting a 17-22-3 record, Vancouver sits sixth in the Pacific Division, above only San Jose and Anaheim. Their big weakness is their penalty kill, whose 66.1-percent kill rate is dead last in the league. So you could certainly understand why the team is eager to make changes, particularly regarding head coach Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau’s firing seem to have already been decided, but the team will keep him around, coaching in limbo, for several more weeks. During a radio spot on Saturday, reporter Rick Dhaliwal suggested that Boudreau won’t be re ..read more

The Toronto Maple Leafs shut out the Dallas Stars 4-0 on Tuesday night. On the Canadian broadcast of the game, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman dropped some more info on the ongoing Brock Boeser and Vancouver Canucks situation. Last week, Friedman reported that Boeser’s agent had permission to talk to other teams about facilitating a potential move. The hockey insider now says that the Washington Capitals could be one of those teams and are a “darkhorse” suitor. Elliotte Friedman links two teams to Brock Boeser as potential matches on Maple Leafs broadcast: Minnesota Wild (though says unclear if ..read more

The Washington Capitals got right back on track with two more standings points after a disappointing loss in New Jersey to kick off their season-long road trip. The Caps scored early and often against the Vancouver Canucks, securing an eventual 5-1 victory. A rather encouraging performance. The Caps played a pretty perfect road game. They never let the Canucks get into the game at five-on-five really at any point in any period. Vancouver managed just four total high-danger chances spread out over 50-plus minutes under that context. Comparatively, as you can see via the heat map, the Caps pro ..read more

The Washington Capitals’s trip through the pacific northwest began with a comfortable win over the blighted Vancouver Canucks. Alex Ovechkin scored two goals early – one off a turnover and then another set up by Strome. Nils Hoglander flashed a fancy backhander to make it to 2-1, but a hard forecheck from Lars Eller helped Mantha to score, then John Carlson capped off a good shooting session to make it 4-1 after two periods. Martin Fehervary added an empty-netter. Caps win! (It is too late for Bailamos.) Alex Ovechkin caught and then promptly passed Wayne Gretzky’s record for most road goals ..read more
