The Washington Capitals have turned their road trip out west around by taking down a very good Vancouver Canucks team on Saturday night. The Capitals are now 2-2 on their trip and have a chance to grab a winning record in the five-game foray against Western Conference opposition with a win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Big win, big effort. TJ Oshie is the best. The Capitals played the Canucks well at five-on-five outside of the first half of the first period and a few spells late in both the second and third periods. Overall they were the better team and really turned the pressure up i ..read more

The Washington Capitals downed the vaunted Vancouver Canucks for an important road win that could have playoff implications. Brock Boeser scored just 71 seconds into the game after Quinn Hughes beat the man of the night. But the Canucks shut up after that, and the Caps struck twice in the second period. First it came from Tom Wilson, asterisked by Ivan Miroshnichenko’s first NHL assist. Alex Ovechkin scored his 19th of the season after some sharp passing, giving the Caps a 2-1 lead after two periods. The Canucks were feisty in the third, but the Caps held them off for the W. The Washington Capitals almost pulled out two wins over the NHL’s top two teams in back-to-back days. The Vancouver Canucks proved to be a tougher test than the Boston Bruins down the stretch and eked out a fortunate 3-2 overtime win to extend their lead at the top of the league. These were probably the best two games in a row the Capitals have played all season. The Capitals were at their best defensively yet again in this game, limiting the high-powered Canucks to just five high-danger chances at five-on-five. Unlike in Boston, they also created a bunch of their own offense with 12 five-on ..read more

The Washington Capitals fell in overtime to the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 after playing a sensational game from start until almost the finish. The Canucks capitalized on a brutal turnover by Connor McMichael with 4.8 seconds remaining in overtime. JT Miller intercepted McMichael’s pass intended for John Carlson and snapped the puck past Darcy Kuemper to the far side of the net for a sudden victory. Inconceivably, the Washington Capitals again played a great game, this time against the Vancouver Canucks and at the wrong side of a back-to-back. Unlike last game, it wasn’t enough to secure two standings points. Nic Dowd scored one minute in, deflecting a great centering pass from Nicolas Aube-Kubel. Connor Garland returned serve with a fast-developing play after a Caps goof in neutral. Alex Ovechkin stayed hot to put the Caps up again, but Nils Hoglander’s pretty goal knotted it 2-2 after two periods, a score which remained after the full sixty minutes. In overtime, Washington had the bette ..read more

Vancouver Canucks winger Andrei Kuzmenko is in Rick Tocchet’s figurative doghouse again. With the Canucks preparing to take on the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, Kuzmenko is set for his third healthy scratch since Thanksgiving. “Just trying to win a game tonight and I felt this was the best lineup,” Tocchet told The Athletic’s Harman Dayal. “We’ll re-evaluate (for) the Dallas game.” This third healthy scratch follows a report from 10 days ago where hockey insider Elliotte Friedman said that multiple teams have been calling the Canucks to inquire about Kuzmenko.
