When I talk to parents who are considering sending their children to camp, I often share all of the wonderful things that children get to experience while at camp including the dance classes with teachers and other dancers from all over the country and the world. I tell them about the outdoor activities like go-karts, ziplining, bungee trampolines, hikes, swimming and all of the beautiful nature that will surround them. I share about our life development workshops that remind our campers what it means to be a good person, not just a good dancer.  I then tell parents about the friendships ..read more

DO YOU WONDER IF YOUR CHILD IS READY FOR CAMP?

Camp Telaphiba hosts hundreds of dancers from all across the country every year. And every year, as a camp owner, I have had parents express their concern and question whether or not their children were ready to come to camp, to be away from home. The question arises because parents want their children to have fun, to grow, to be safe and outside of their walls at home, they are not too sure how their children will do. The concern comes from a place of love and protection, of course.  A STORY ABOUT Josie Years ago, I met 14 year old Josie. I noticed her in the check-in line at Camp regi ..read more

What does TELAPHIBA even mean?

December 2021 - What does TELAPHIBA even mean?  People often ask where our camp name came from. First, I would love to help with how to say Telaphiba. You pronounce it Tell-A-Fee-Buh. Now, let me tell you the story.  My family is a military family. My grandfather was a colonel in the air force and he moved his family 32 times before my father graduated high school. I often begin telling this story on the last day of camp and have asked all children how many times they have moved in their lives and the most I have heard so far was 5. Needless to say, my family moved A LOT!  This ..read more

I frequently have questions from parents asking about whether their children will make friends at camp. I understand their concern as camp is a new environment where they can’t really help their children navigate the unknown while they are away from home. We have a lot of campers who come from all over the country and the world and many come by themselves, away from home for the very first time. It is very rare that a child won’t make one, if not many friends at camp but I wanted to share a few tips with families to ensure confidence and success for kids when they come. These next five tips w ..read more

THREE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT CAMP

We are only a couple of months away from my favorite time of year --- CAMP TIME! The excitement bubbles up in me when the snow starts to melt, the ground starts to warm up and the trees start getting leaves. It’s now when parents really start to wonder, what will their children do this summer besides telling them, “they’re bored” in the first week of Summer break.  With enrollment growing every day and as our Camp T team is preparing to HOST the BEST camps ever, I have a few minutes to reflect on WHY I get so excited for camp. SLOWING DOWN First, during a school year, kids are super busy ..read more

We hope 2021 is finding you well! We are so excited and in full planning mode for camps this summer! We are working on our parent packet, NEW! Safer Camp Guidelines, and are producing website and video content to help give campers and families a sense of what our 2021 camps will look like in more detail. With that in mind, we do want families to have time to talk about our guidelines and be able to ask us any questions you may have about upcoming camps!  Most importantly, we want you to know that Camp Telaphiba will still be camp: children will laugh and play outside; they will get to dan ..read more

Camp Telaphiba is a unique experience for everyone who comes - staff, as well as campers. There are so many opportunities for “firsts”, for GROWTH - which is one of our core values! We are so happy knowing that children from all over the country and the world get to exercise, not just their arm and leg muscles at camp but also, their independence, their good choices, their friendship building skills, and their overall comfortability with the unknown and how they can GROW from that space. What an honor for us.  We have so many campers coming to us from their homes far away to stay with us ..read more

I can’t really describe it but... Camp holds a special place in my heart. Every time I think about it, I smile. With fear of sounding cliche, it really is a magical place. As I think about it, I realize that it doesn’t really have all that much to do with the activities we do. It has to do with the people who come. It is the staff who remember what it is like to be a child, to feel a little worried about being away from home and not knowing anyone. These staff who also care so much about making the experience unforgettable for the campers and for themselves. It is the campers who step outside ..read more

During the holiday season, I have struggled with trying to find meaningful gifts for my two sons who are now 12 and 14. I LOVE to give gifts and always want to surprise my family members with something they will really love.  A few years back, I decided to do some research on how to find the BEST GIFT for someone and came across a study published in 2016. I was not surprised by the  study’s findings. Here is an excerpt from the 2016 article, The Science of Gift Giving: Experiences Mean More Than Stuff, at Seeker.com written about the study:  A new study from the University of To ..read more
