The Medal Count (TMC) is a gymnastics blog focusing on the gymnasts of the past. Here you will find gymnastics content from an era when the Cold War was raging, judges gave out 10s, and someone other than Chusovitina was the oldest athlete in WAG. TMC will cover every era of women's gymnastics from its inaugural Olympics in 1928 to the current quad.

Gymnastics fans have taken note to the growing success of Sweden in women’s gymnastics over the past few years. But one byproduct of this recent success is fans often incorrectly interpret the improving results as first time accomplishments in Swedish program history. On one occasion Lauren Hopkins over at The Gymternet had to specifically address that she didn’t “forget” to mention Sweden in her list of programs that achieved their best placement ever at the 2022 World Championships. The truth is, Sweden has already reached many of the most prestigious milestones in the sport.

Due to her lengthy career as a National Team Member and winning gold medals in two different World Championships, Kara Eaker is one of the most iconic and well-respected gymnasts in NCAA gymnastics. But Kara, a gymnast at the University of Utah has recently announced her premature retirement. Ending her gymnastics career even with multiple years of eligibility remaining and going as far as to academically withdraw from the University just to get away from the place.

The following is the number of times each gymnast has competed in floor exercise finals at the European Championships. Special thanks to Gymnastics History for tracking down primary sources so missing results from the 1957, 1961 and 1963 Championships could be found. Sandra Izbasa who was injured in warmups is not credited with an appearance in 2007 due to a long-standing policy that gymnasts must produce a scored routine in order to receive credit for an appearance in any data rankings.

I have recently finished completing my data entry on the full history of the European Championships in women’s gymnastics from its debut in 1957 into the present day. Now that the data entry portion is complete, I will begin releasing all the rankings I can pull from it. This post is the first of many and will eventually form a “hub” of dozens of rankings sorted by personal, national, apparatus, and era rankings. These rankings already exist for the World Championships and Olympic Games.

Call it a sign of the times we live in, but there is currently a statistic in women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) that is so baffling, it makes me wonder how this current era will be interpreted by fans in future decades. While this is normally a gymnastics website, every once in a while I opt to highlight a non-gymnastics story that I feel is too important not to talk about. This particular case was too infuriating, tragic, heartbreaking and ultimately too important not to share.
In 2022 Serena Williams published an essay describing her near death experience during the birth of her first child. Serena described what it was like to be scared for your life, to have fears you were going to die, and how it defined her entire outlook on life. But Serena Williams didn’t simply want to tell the story of how she exper ..read more
