In solutions where the iASP and Single Sign On (SSO) is configured the challenge is to set the synchronization of the Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM) between Prod and DR nodes. Such replication is done via Tivoli Directory Server. This mechanism is not easy to set up, difficult to manage and monitoring. Unfortunately this the only solution what IBM provides (officially). In this article I provide the procedure how to simplify it. I’ve been asked several times – “Is it possible to store SSO configuration on the independent ASP” and forget about Tivoli replication? Yes, it is possible. It simp ..read more

Execute IBMi command within multiple sessions

Recently I was asked how to execute a command typed in 5250 terminal among multiple sessions. For instance, when you need to create a library DEV on three systems, and you are lazy do copy/paste.   The first thing which comes to my mind, “use MobaXterm soft”. MobaXterm is very handy terminal which supports multiple protocols, unfortunately it is only available for Windows. If you still interested, and you want to use it, download the soft from their website. The interface offers functionality “MultiExec” – a single command is executed on all selected sessions. Open all telnet sessions to ..read more

In Q1 2021 the new version of LPARKit was released. The latest version brings functionality for ‘small’ Power Servers when no HMC, no VIOS is used, and everything related to the LPAR is managed from the Virtual Partition Manager. This version can allow an user to create and manage LPARs or clone the OS from easy green screen interface. What’s new in version 3? This release is dedicated for basic small P05/P10 installations, where no Hardware Management Console is used, and the LAN console is used instead. In such configuration a new LPAR can be created only thru Virtual Partition Manager. With ..read more

Recently the new version of the tool LPARKit was released. The tool which I already described in another post a year ago when the 1st version was released. The 2nd version brings some additional functionality which I describe in this post. Maybe at the begging I will describe main functions of the LPARKit. It automates deployment of IBM i LPARs. Not only by creating the LPAR but it also clone the operating system on any type of infrastructure It is probably the closest container type deployment tool for IBM i It isolates VIOS and the HMC from the green screen user Allows to map/umap NPIV adap ..read more

One of the most popular posts on my blog are these related to the HMC, functionality and management. Recently I’ve been invited by IBM research/development team to an adviser role in order to help with improvement the interface. Because at the same time,  I realized there are multiple things which were already added with the latest Service Packs but I was not aware of them. I decided to write this post and share the tricks which you may not know. First of all, I’m not going to discuss about pros and cons between the old classic interface and the new Enhanced+ which is the default and the ..read more

VIOS 3.1 upgrade for everyone

I assume there are many installations which need to go to VIOS 3.1 by October 2020 due to end of support for VIOS 2.x. Because, I did not find any upgrade procedure for “dummies”, I decided to write one which I hope people find useful. I do not cover only the upgrade process itself, but also share some advises how to do it safely and recover in case of troubles. Upgrade Virtual I/O Server to 3.1 is completely different process than before. For instance, you are going to need an extra disk to perform the operation. Interested? There is not much documentation on that topic. Definitely the best o ..read more
