This recipe came about because I was asked by Livliga to come up with a few holiday recipes. I adore the holidays and I love all the foods that we often don’t eat any other time of the year. What I don’t love is how I often feel afterward.
People like to blame the amino acid, tryptophan, in turkey as the thing that makes them sleepy. But it’s actually not. It’s actually the volume of food and the high amount of fat and sugar in everything. (Curious to know more? Check out this article)
So what would it feel like to know you get to decide how you felt after your festive holiday meal? I th ..read more

[Part 1 is here if you need to get caught up first!]
I felt like I had lost everything.
I was 32. I was previously divorced. I owned a failing catering company that I had started 3 years earlier. It was 2008. I lived in Bend, Oregon which was one of the towns that had the farthest to fall when the housing bubble burst and the economy crashed. I owned a house that was now worth less than half of what I owed on it. I had not really paid myself in 3 years. My company looked successful on the outside and was a financial wreck on the inside. I was broke and in debt.
My boyfriend of 2.5 years and I ..read more

I lived in over 15 houses by the time I was 18 and had experienced homelessness as well.
This start on life gave me grit and determination to succeed that has served me well as an adult in many ways. It also developed an unending well of empath ..read more

I have had a few people ask me why I don’t include the nutritional info at the bottom of my recipes. Seems like it would be a good thing to get out in the open. It might not be a popular opinion.
I’m hoping that if this brings up feelings that are uncomfortable for you that you stick with it and feel into why that might be. I also encourage you to message me. Let’s start a conversation about this.
[Disclaimer: I want to be sensitive to the fact that some people have severe medical conditions that require them to be very careful of their nutritional intake. If this is you, please take care of y ..read more

As a bariatric surgeon, I feel like I am fighting a fire. The fire is the obesity epidemic and the brave patient’s I see are the fire line. Behind them though are literally millions of people who are still wondering how this obesity problem is happening to them. With those people, are their children who are constantly exposed to highly processed, unhealthy, depleted “food”.
Sometimes they feel that the problem is hopeless, that they are helpless.
It’s just easier and quicker (though not less expensive) to go to the drive-through. It’s just not true, however. Altho ..read more
