Hi folks, I hope this message finds you safe and well. Starting the countdown til I am on your shores again this August! Different location this time and some new toys to try! Hopefully the new nautilus and sage 10 weights will be joining me! I will be staying opposite the kingfisher boat ramp and Prices Key looking out onto Anna Maria sound.  On google maps looks like a deep channel and some extensive grass areas.  Any info on how tide affects depth of water and what might be hanging about will be gratefully received! Tight lines all Vern ..read more

I’m on vacation in northern Washington, about an hour north east of Seattle. I brought my 5 Wt and 3wt with me but am having troubles finding waters for trout (most posts and forums are for steelheads which are closed as of April 1st). We’re up here for a few more days before we will head south through central Washington down to Bend Oregon. Anyone have any suggestions ..read more

When casting larger, heavier / weighted flies like 2/0 and up for bass or salmon for example. Is there any advantage to casting them on fly gear as opposed to just chucking them with some ultralight spinning gear? Or is it just a preference thing at that point ..read more

Andros Island Bonefish Club

I got to go over to the Middle Bight of Andros Island this weekend for 3 days of bonefishing. The weather was perfect: moderate winds, clear blue skies. We had great guides, Shaun who owns the club, and his nephew DJ. They did a great job. Unfortunately, the bonefish didn't get the memo. We saw very few fish, and even fewer that would take a fly. With two boats, we only caught about 10 bonefish in 3 days. Brutal. It was still a great trip: the company was great, the fishing was great, and the beer was cold. I learned how to play dominos. Overall I thought it was a good lodge. It is very-mu ..read more

Scouting the freshwater 'glades - 21 March

Still doing a bit of freshwater scouting whenever I'm able since I'm wanting to find a good population of peacock bass in my local canals... Funny thing - in the canals behind all the houses down here in south Florida the peacock population is doing just fine - but none of those canals allow access with a boat.... and back in December the bigger canals that I can launch my skiff into - got a bad cold spell that killed off many of my local peacocks...   Finally found a few peas the other day along with a host of other small fish species... The following pics show my first few - all on ..read more

So, they just completed the March Merkin permit tournament in Key west. - 25 expert anglers, - 25 most-expert guides. - 3 full days of competition - Probably the best permit fishery in the world. In three days, the 25 boats caught ... ONE permit. The winner was Kat Vallilee, who is married to Nathaniel Linville, the owner of the Key West fly shop The Angling Company. Between them, they probably have thousands of days on the water. They are undoubtably the best pair of permit fishers in the world. Congratulations. And I bet there is a 100% chance that daughter is going to out-fish all of us ..read more

Fly and spin Fishing Grand Bahama

Spent a week fishing the flats outside Old Bahama Bay with a focus on targeting talleys (triggers) on fly.  Stalked three fish for an hour and half with no success.  had them follow the fly right up to my boots but would not eat.  Finally, I gave up and broke out a spinner and closed the deal.  Running the little ole skiff back to the resort I crossed and interesting object in the water in about 10' of water and 3 talleys came up to the boat.  i spent the next 45 minutes feeding them a fly and finally, FINALLY, one hooked up.  After landing it and trying to hold i ..read more

I took the kayak out this morning just as pink was starting in the eastern sky. I launched the SS BooBoo from a park a few miles south of the house and into the IRL. I had my TFO Mangrove in hand with a box of creations some of you helped me make. Just after full light I got into a bunch of lady fish. Big ones. What a hoot that was!  Got a couple smaller jacks as well. No real feat of fly fishing prowess for sure. I think lady fish would hit a polished piece of poop if it moved in the water. But they fight hard and look like little tarpon when they jump. Schimonnows were the bearer of the ..read more
