Two casts, one tarpon ... easy peasy

So, this forum has been dead dead dead lately. Might as well post something. It's a little early for tarpon fishing in the ocean off the beach here in Venice Florida. I don't usually start until the middle to the end of May. (Our "season" is mid-May to end-of-June). Friends have been saying they see tarpon, and I was sweating as I walked to my car in the morning, and we have love bugs. That usually means it is season. I went out with a friend. I was fly, he was bait. It was a little cooler and rougher than I expected. We saw a pod of tarpon within the first half hour. They were quiet, and ..read more

Hi folks, I hope this message finds you safe and well. Starting the countdown til I am on your shores again this August! Different location this time and some new toys to try! Hopefully the new nautilus and sage 10 weights will be joining me! I will be staying opposite the kingfisher boat ramp and Prices Key looking out onto Anna Maria sound.  On google maps looks like a deep channel and some extensive grass areas.  Any info on how tide affects depth of water and what might be hanging about will be gratefully received! Tight lines all Vern ..read more

I’m on vacation in northern Washington, about an hour north east of Seattle. I brought my 5 Wt and 3wt with me but am having troubles finding waters for trout (most posts and forums are for steelheads which are closed as of April 1st). We’re up here for a few more days before we will head south through central Washington down to Bend Oregon. Anyone have any suggestions ..read more

Keys and Marquesa's for bones and tarpon (not permit)

Went down to Key West for an Old Dominion concert, and decided to fish as well. The lead singer was in an ATV accident (!) and the concert got cancelled. Went with a friend who hasn't done a lot of saltwater flats fly-fishing, so decided bones and tarpon would be less stressful than permit.  Our guide, the infinitely-awesome and patient Aaron Snell showed us a LOT of tarpon and quite a few bones. We caught 3 bonefish, and had great shots at about 50 tarpon in the Marquesas. (the bones looked bigger in real life ...) The conditions were perfect: clear skies, clear water, moderate wind on ..read more

First trip of the year here in the pacific north wet. Not a lot of action but a couple decent sized trout. I was using a brown, bead head wooly bug-r (apparently you can't spell that word here), size 6.  I would have preferred 8s or 10s. Sorry about the face, but as they as they I have a face for radio! Nice little rainbow Decent brown This was actually my first brown so was really happy with him. I hooked a couple more be they got off. Hoping to get out again before spring runoff blows the streams out. LFB ..read more

When casting larger, heavier / weighted flies like 2/0 and up for bass or salmon for example. Is there any advantage to casting them on fly gear as opposed to just chucking them with some ultralight spinning gear? Or is it just a preference thing at that point ..read more

Andros Island Bonefish Club

I got to go over to the Middle Bight of Andros Island this weekend for 3 days of bonefishing. The weather was perfect: moderate winds, clear blue skies. We had great guides, Shaun who owns the club, and his nephew DJ. They did a great job. Unfortunately, the bonefish didn't get the memo. We saw very few fish, and even fewer that would take a fly. With two boats, we only caught about 10 bonefish in 3 days. Brutal. It was still a great trip: the company was great, the fishing was great, and the beer was cold. I learned how to play dominos. Overall I thought it was a good lodge. It is very-mu ..read more

Scouting the freshwater 'glades - 21 March

Still doing a bit of freshwater scouting whenever I'm able since I'm wanting to find a good population of peacock bass in my local canals... Funny thing - in the canals behind all the houses down here in south Florida the peacock population is doing just fine - but none of those canals allow access with a boat.... and back in December the bigger canals that I can launch my skiff into - got a bad cold spell that killed off many of my local peacocks...   Finally found a few peas the other day along with a host of other small fish species... The following pics show my first few - all on ..read more
