Shore bound fluke on the fly.

I’m trying to target fluke and weakfish from shore. I’ve got a 6wt switch rod, a shooting head line, and a full sinking (5ips) line. Some guys swear by the floating line others the sinking line. I know the area I’m fishing determines floating or sinking line but what “spot criteria” do I switch from one to the other? Is there a flow speed/depth ratio? Is it the more you do it, the better you get at figuring it out? Where do you start. I’ll give you my confusing spot… 12-16’ deep fast current when it’s moving. 100yds to the right and it’s 4-6’ and swings soft. Both “spots” hold fish. What line ..read more

Is it possible this could be a foul hook - re:carp on the fly

So I caught this smallish carp at the base of a dam, where the water was spilling over. I’ve legitimately caught carp on the fly before, but never on a clouser (although this was a small clouser)…is it possible this was a foul hook despite the fly being set inside its mouth (see close up pic). I was basically fishing for anything as this spot has lg mouth, sm mouth and for a short window of time that includes now, schoolie sized stripers. I did see a school of carp making the rounds and was hoping one would take the fly, although I wasn’t sure how likely that would happen. In the past, while f ..read more

Went on another mayfly session to the local stream and soon spotted the first rising fish at a location where I had seen a trout last week. Some of the rising fish where dace but one was definitely a trout. Targeting the dace was tricky because of overhanging trees. After every clumsy cast I waited a while so everything would calm down and fish would continue to rise. That tactic yielded two dace and a spectacular hit from the trout … who completely missed the fly.   When the action died down I tried tossing a streamer close to the bank to see if any trout where present. The trout that p ..read more

Morning all. I have a fly rod that was one of my go-to rods in-the-day. I built it in 2012 for short casts - maybe heads -  - heavy lifting - from boat in the rips off Monomoy.  It was built when 30" fish were plentiful. Therefor it has a epoxy ring installed at 30". It's built like I build all my rods. Grip and fighting butt are epoxied directly onto the blank. Then on the lathe to shape. So, no voids under the grip that might cause failure of grip. All components are saltwater proof  REC Recoil single foot runners and tip-top. Fuji titanium SiC stripper and 2nd guide. Of cours ..read more

I miss being able to walk into a fly shop and see a great variety of fly fishing gear, tying supplies, all different varieties of tied up flies, every piece of fly fishing related  equipment you could imagine. Buying this stuff online just isn’t the same. Just getting back into fly fishing after many many many many years of barely touching it. Tying up a few deceivers and I came across this. Brings back a lot of memories.  Maybe @TimS will remember the bottom picture.  Shortly after the beginning of SOL, Tim was showing me how he ties silicone spearing. I had never used Pea ..read more

With Tuesday as a day off coinciding with the last day of somewhat stable weather I went on a mission to catch something on a large mayfly pattern. With the water still murky I first tried the squirmy and that got me a small rudd. No signs of stocked trout not even on the spots where you are not allowed to fish… I next tried the section of the stream where the syndicate issues day permits to so non-club members can fish there also. Off course it is a big scam as there are hardly any fish in there particularly the advertised trout. Streamer fishing only caused lost tackle as you could not cle ..read more

Germany 20-05-2024 On Monday I was in a lazy mood and choose to fish the mill pool of the nearest stream over the border. I had misjudged the amount of rain that had fallen in the previous day or at least the effects on the water clarity. The stream had risen a few inches and visibility was very poor. I tried all the tricks in the book but only got nibbles from the tiniest of tiny fish. Tried streamers for pike and perch but none of those around or in biting mood. All I could get was a dace, a gudgeon and a ruffe which I never had caught on the fly before. I had the pool for myself for most ..read more

Last week I had an extended weekend due to a public holiday and a day off. The early success at the chub spot motivated me to visit that spot again. The section above the weir / fish ladder was again empty with only some tiny bleak (smallest shiner species) picking up stuff from the surface. The best I could do was one small chub from the bank. Fishing a dry like a sedge or large mayfly pattern was futile so I switched to tossing small black streamers in the pools of the fish ladder. That worked but not as intended, I hooked something but not the desired species. I had actually hooked a pike ..read more

Following advice from all of you who offered experienced suggestions my son and I tried various locations from shore. DBJ said it would be tough and it was. We ended up booking a guide from Bud and Mary's for a half day as someone else suggested. Excellent guide and he set us up perfectly but the only fish passed too far to the side to make a good presentation. Waited a while but nothing so we moved. No results. Couldn't get the same guide so we booked with someone else for another half day. His first choice for a spot was taken so we tried elsewhere with only a couple of shots with no follows ..read more
