Haha! Quite a few people have asked me this so I thought it would make a great title! I think when I expressed how disappointed I was with the outcome of the race, some took it that I hadn’t actually finished! Good news is, I did, and it wasn’t my worst time either. Bad news is I didn’t get anywhere close to the three goals I’d set for myself. So, what happened that day? Truth is, I’m still trying to figure it out. After six weeks, I still don’t have any real answers. But even without them, I would like to share a few lessons that have emerged from the whole experience, and as always, many app ..read more

Something I love about having a blog is connecting with so many amazing runners around the world and getting to share some of their inspirational stories on this platform. Today, I’m so excited to introduce you to my friend Musline who, like me, loves running and travelling and if she can combine both, even better! We met on social media a few years ago and were immediately struck by how many things we had in common, for one, we were born just days apart in October (same year!), we each have two kids, love reading and travelling, could live without the beach (yes!), have similar running journe ..read more

First held in 1921, the Comrades Marathon, coined The Ultimate Human Race, is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon road race, run annually in South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The direction of the race alternates each year between the “up” run (87 km) starting from Durban and the “down” run (now 90.184 km) starting from Pietermaritzburg. On 28 August 2022, Tshireletso did the “up” run in an incredible 9-hours and on 11 June 2023 she completed the “down” run in an even faster time! In between these two races, she ran ..read more

Springbok Vasbyt Trail Half | Race Recap

When my father and sister announced they were headed to Tshwane (Pretoria) in South Africa for the long weekend in July, I spontaneously joined them without my little family! But given the Phikwe Half Marathon was only a fortnight away, I knew I couldn’t afford to skip my 18km long run. In a frantic search online, I came across the Springbok Vasbyt Race which had a 21km option. I signed up but almost immediately was engulfed in worry – the race was trail, which despite my ultra-trail marathoner status, is terrain I struggle with, and Tshwane is cruelly hilly. Also, how would I get to and from ..read more

Walking from Jamestown to Osu Castle in Accra

On a recent visit to Ghana, I participated in the 10km race of the The Accra Intercity Homowo Marathon. We started in the financial hub of the city, ran past several top-notch hotels, Government departments, hospitals, and banks, before making our way to the oldest district in Accra – Jamestown. Once I was done, I decided to walk back to the city centre which gave me a great opportunity to closely study the buildings and features I had passed during the race. The race finished at Jamestown Lighthouse, which was originally built at James Fort in 1871, but replaced in the 1930s by this tow ..read more

Since 2021, I’ve been fortunate to visit Ghana a few times for work, and I’ve blogged extensively about my running experiences here. Remember my runs in the rustic town of Big Ada; my run across the famous Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku, my runs in the affluent town of Akosombo where hydroelectric power is generated and my hike in the Akwamu Gorge for the panoramic view of the lower regions of the Volta River system? If you don’t, click the links above! Although I haven’t spent a significant amount of time in the capital – Accra, with each trip, I’ve tried to explore more and more of the city ..read more

Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Guinea, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a complicated and tragic colonial history and was largely formed from the merging of distinct settlements around Fort James (British), Ussher Fort (Dutch), and Fort Christiansborg (Danish). It was the capital of the British Gold Coast between 1877 and 1957, and since independence has transitioned into a modern and vibrant metropolis. The capital’s architecture reflects its complex history, ranging from colonial buildings to modern skyscr ..read more

Although Tshireletso is an extremely talented runner, her hard work, commitment and sacrifice cannot be underestimated. But what always stands out for me is the absolute joy with which she runs and the depth of her feelings when she does. The very act of running has a transformative power over her, and she is truly at her happiest on the run. On 8th January 2023, she ran a spectacular 81km trail in Italy. In an inspirational two-part interview, Tshire is extremely vulnerable with us as she shares what inspired her to run here, her thoughts and emotions on the trail and her intense connection w ..read more

On Sunday 30 April 2023, I participated in the inaugural Gaborone Striders City Marathon. The Gaborone Striders Running Club was founded in 2012 by “a group of friends who had just discovered the passion in running” and it has since become a well-established and respected part of Gaborone’s running community. One of their well-known and much-loved events, the Gaborone Striders 10×10 Challenge, is now a mainstay on Botswana’s race calendar, and has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. So, when the Club announced that they would be organising the Gaborone Striders City Marathon, a race inte ..read more
