We are all crew.” – Marshall McLuhan “To have dominion over all creation does not imply unrestrained exploitation. We are to treat creation as the creator would, not from our own selfish consumption but for the good of all creation.” – Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” – Chief Seattle “It is our collective and individual res ..read more

By PATRICK VEREL ON APRIL 13, 2021 for Fordham News. Last September, after six months of a raging pandemic with no end in sight, unemployment had nearly doubled to an estimated 12.6 million Americans. The daily death toll had reached 1,000. Yet in that same month, the Sept. 2 Dow Jones S&P closed at a record high 3,580 points.   According to Anthony Annett, Ph.D., a climate change and sustainable development adviser at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, that kind of paradox is just one sign that the way we think about the economy is broken. By PATRICK VEREL on MARCH 24, 2021 for Fordham News. To say these are challenging economic times is an understatement. As Covid-19 vaccines are being distributed, the promise of a revived economy seems closer than ever. Not so fast, though, as experts warn that life in the United States will probably not fully return to normal until the fall. And yet in spite of all of the uncertainty, entrepreneurs are still founding new companies. The Fordham Foundry, a business incubator based at the Gabelli School of Business, has continued to stage contests for burgeoning ideas. Its most recent ..read more

By TAYLOR HA for Fordham News on November 23, 2020. Fordham students and Bronx elementary school children have been reading books together every week since September, thanks to a virtual literacy initiative created by a University employee and alumna. “The children get to have a one-on-one experience, practice their reading skills, and build a bond with somebody who’s different and can be a role model for them,” said Olga Baez, executive secretary in Fordham College at Lincoln Center’s residential life office and founder of the Bronx-based nonprofit StriveHigher Inc., whic ..read more

By PATRICK VEREL for FORDHAM NEWS on November 30, 2020. Rich Shrestha was working on a research project about consumer behavior in the Bronx when the pandemic upended everything in March. As the economy went into a tailspin, his mind went back to his childhood in New Haven, Connecticut, where his father ran a Subway franchise for a decade. “I was 8 years old when he first bought it, so I saw him always grinding away every day, putting in 12-hour days. So, I can sympathize with the small business owners who are trying to survive in the age of COVID,” he said. Rich Shrestha “I saw on ..read more

BY SIERRA MCCLEARY-HARRIS ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2020. FORDHAM MAGAZINE We’ve all heard the cliché “reading is fundamental,” but for many, getting access to books is a real hardship. That’s where Bronx native Brandon Montes, FCRH ’13, comes in. Montes founded the Norwood Community Library. It’s essentially a mobile library: Montes fills a crate or two with free books for passersby and sets up shop on the sidewalk—on East Gun Hill Road between Wayne and Bainbridge Avenues in the Bronx—for an afternoon every weekend. The day varies, but typically, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., anyone is w ..read more

apple.com/newsroom on June 16, 2020. For Sofia Ongele, 19, who just finished her sophomore year at New York’s Fordham University, her focus for change lies at the intersection of tech and social justice. ReDawn, her first iOS app, is a powerful example. After one of her college friends was sexually assaulted during her freshman year, Ongele created ReDawn to help survivors access resources in a safe, easy, and sensitive way. “I wanted to make something that makes this process less isolating,” says Ongele, who has been approached by organizations that want to partner with her on the app. But th ..read more
