by Flyboy Connor I forgot to mention that there are also two beginner scenarios in the Keeper's Handbook. The first of these sounds quite good (the second is very open and I think not very suitable for a beginning GM, but I have enough other modules to try out ..read more

by oh_my Thanks for the detailed response, I appreciate your help. It feels like It’s not so much that the stater set omits elements of character creation and instead just presents the simplest way of doing it. So the characters would be close to fully formed with the stater set ..read more

by LuxBux Hi Glen, I don't actually own the Starter Set (already had the solo and the scenarios; they're quite old - but good!), nor do I own Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition) (I use Cthulhu Eternal), so this is based on review and discussion-reading - caveat emptor. From what I've gleaned, the Starter rulebook only gives you what the full rulebook calls the "Quick Fire method" of assigning scores to Characteristics - assign eight pre-determined values to the Characteristics. The full rulebook has two other methods: the "Rolling Method" and the "Point Buy method". The latter involves distributing ..read more

by LuxBux I agree with Dan; you'll get more gaming out of Doors to Darkness. That said, the Starter Set has a solo scenario, which is a good way of road-testing the rules before running a game (and it's now out of print as a standalone product). And you get some dice! But either's good, really. Gateways to Terror is another solid place to get started - and the cheapest. You get three scenarios rather than five, but one of them is set in the Valley of The Kings... Mmm...Egyptilicious ..read more

by brumcg Howdy folks! I'm contemplating trying to run CoC at some point for my group. Long story! I'm considering Call of Cthulhu Starter Set or Doors to Darkness. I already own the 7e core rules. I'd go with the Starter Set, but a review here wrote that character generation doesn't have the "full rules." Even though this may only be a one-shot, this group doesn't like pre-gens. We haven't played CoC since the 80's (?) and then only once with a bad GM (not me this time). Some of the players have played The Haunting, so I'm avoiding the Quickstart. Thanks ..read more
