Background The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic posed a significant threat to human life. Vaccines played an unprecedented role in managing adverse outcomes, but the virus's ability to mutate and produce new variants posed ongoing challenges. This research aimed to examine the association between different types and numbers of doses of COVID-19 vaccinations and the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients. Triple-Valve Endocarditis: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature
Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice - Current Issue
by
2w ago
Multivalve endocarditis with triple valve involvement is a rare phenomenon and presents a unique management challenge to physicians given the paucity of summative analyses. Google Scholar and PubMed databases were searched for terms related to triple-valve endocarditis (TVE). Articles published up until December 31, 2023, were included. We identified 41 published cases of triple-valve endocarditis. The most common source of infection was dental/oral (n = 10). Streptococcus spp was the most common organism isolated (n = 15), followed by Staphylococcus organisms (n = 9). Surgical intervention oc ..read more

Verification of Immunity to Measles in Adults: An Important but Overlooked Topic
Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice - Current Issue
by
2w ago
Recently, there have been several measles outbreaks reported in the United States and globally. Declining rates of childhood vaccination and potential lack of complete coverage in the adult population could impact population levels of immunity against measles over the next decade and beyond. Therefore, it is important for primary care clinicians and others who provide vaccinations to verify the status of immunity to measles as part of routine clinical care for adult patients. Self-reported receipt of “childhood vaccinations” might not reflect actual receipt of the currently licensed live-virus ..read more

Early Predictive Value of Laboratory Inflammatory Markers in Evaluating Both Lung Involvement and Progression in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19: A Retrospective Study
Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice - Current Issue
by
2w ago
Background The new coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2, first discovered in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, rapidly spread over the globe. It has created many challenges for the world's health and treatment systems. Due to the outspread of this virus and the limited treatment facilities, one of the important issues is the early diagnosis of patients who may continue to suffer from a severe type of disease. This study aims to determine the relationship between hospitalized COVID-19 patients' computed tomography (CT) scan results and laboratory results such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) an ..read more

Hematogenous Dissemination of Scedosporiosis in an Immunocompetent Patient
Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice - Current Issue
by
2w ago
Scedosporiosis is becoming an increasingly recognized cause of treatment-resistant opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. Fungal infections with Scedosporium spp. have also been seen in immunocompetent patients with previously damaged bronchopulmonary trees. Presentation may be associated with mycetoma, sinopulmonary involvement, extrapulmonary localized infections, and, in rare cases, disseminated infections. We present a case of an immunocompetent 57-year-old woman with prior pulmonary tuberculosis who was found to have Scedosporium boydii/apiospermum pneumonia and Scedospor ..read more
