Demystifying Custom Molded Seating: Part 2
Posture & Mobility Blog
by Jenn McKee

Part 1 of this blog highlighted the common questions I’ve received from service users related to custom molded seating. Part 2 will dive into the service provider’s perspective. Below are questions I have commonly received from service providers over the years, as well as my response based on experience. Isn’t it scary to create something so uniquely custom without being able to see, feel, touch or try the final solution we are making for the individual under our care? What if I just want the supplier to do it?  Many things feel scary when we try them for the first time (or first few time ..read more

The concept of custom molded seating solutions can often be controversial and sometimes misunderstood. Though there have been many advancements in molding technology, education & training, it appears there is frequently some element of fear around the decision to mold from the service users and clinicians I have encountered over the years. My hope is that this blog will help both service users and service providers by providing insight that may facilitate an open dialogue when considering molded seating solutions. In Part 1 I aim to shed light on service users’ perspectives in an easy-to-f ..read more

Wow, how satisfying my personal experience was to listen to so many engaging speakers, reunite with colleagues from all over the world and feel energized by the common passion we all share!  That passion is 24-hour postural care, pressure care and function for all ages and diagnostic demographics.  Our Posture & Mobility table was hopping to say the least, and that wasn’t just Scott! So many clinicians stopped by to share their thoughts on their own experiences with our training and mentorship programs, whilst others had a curiosity and desire to participate at some point once fu ..read more

Hard to believe this year is coming to a screeching halt. I am unsure whether it has been a quick year or a slow year… but it sure has been a great year despite COVID and all its variants! Our clinical work varied between hands on and virtual with a lot more virtual experiences than I would have predicted this time last year. Between our virtual mentorship program and our online continuing professional education webinar opportunities I found myself embracing this method of clinical demonstration and learning. Leading discussions on and sharing 24 hour postural care thoughts and experiences glo ..read more

I was recently asked to participate in an interview with Sarah Clayton from Simple Stuff Works and the Wired Collective as part of a Wise Table Discussion led by Mindy at wiredONdevelopment online from New Zealand (the full interview is available to watch below). The interview topic was related to 24 hour postural care with an emphasis on the sitting and lying components. If you know anything about me, you know I can’t pass up an opportunity to discuss my passion, especially with such brilliant minds. The opening question was posed by Sarah and went something like this: “If I am an individual ..read more

Why, Why and Why?
Posture & Mobility Blog
by Sharon Sutherland

I have come to the realisation that in clinical practice related to 24 hour postural care we are not asking WHY frequently enough. For example: The individual we are working with presents in their chair with a pelvic obliquity, pelvic rotation and legs sweeping to one side. Their life box presents as a parallelogram, with one iliac crest and ASIS tucked up inside their ribs. There is also a palpable posterior lateral rib shape deformation. The individual is reported as having repeated chest infections, recurring GI challenges and occasional redness on one buttock, lateral trochanter. a ..read more
