Like you, every day, I’m slowly adding more stuff into my home.  There’s the functional pieces from the sofa to the coasters, the cozifiers (thanks to Deborah Needleman for that perfect word) like the extra throw pillows and snuggly blankets, the stuff of daily life; shoes, mail, mugs and dog beds.  Over time, every room in our house is holding more stuff and we’re managing it whether we realize it or not.  If everything that sits out in your home has a voice, what started as a pretty melody can turn into a screaming roar when left unchecked.  At times I’ve felt like my s ..read more

Updating a 100 Year-Old Bathroom Copy

We have one bathroom on the first level of our home and it’s an en suite to my office which is technically a bedroom.  The original layout worked great, we only have one guest ever stay in my office since we have four bedrooms and three baths upstairs, the tub is rarely used. I loved the shutters, clawfoot tub, texture added with the bead-board, floors and the fact that it was sconce ready. What needed attention? The plaster walls were damaged, the bead-board was in bad shape and it needed just a little cosmetic update. Bead-board shows up a few places in this house so we decided to rem ..read more

Happy branch cutting season to you and yours! It’s officially spring which means it should be getting easier to find some branches in your yard to cut and bring inside. But what if you don’t have a yard, or you don’t want to cut four big branches off your magnolia trees every ten days for the rest of your life? Although I would always prefer real greens to pretend greens, sometimes you need options. Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite spectacular fake greens. Above on the left is a faux magnolia branch. I love that it has a bud. On the right I added two more live branches from my yar ..read more

3 Surface Styling Tips
Nesting Place Blog

Our living room surfaces are many. Built in shelves around the window, a large coffee table and a black side table. And that’s just what you can see from this angle.  Stuff always seems to pile on during the holidays and I have to be purposeful to reevaluate every January. My goal: the most amount of style with the least amount of stuff. So my surfaces can’t be too empty or too full, and I want them to look pretty, both individually and together as a whole.  Here are three rules I followed to simplify my surfaces without sacrificing style: Nail that Scale: It takes a lot more smal ..read more

Cleaning Like A Boss

Last week I shared that I’ve been decluttering and it’s ALWAYS been the case for me that decluttering naturally ends up with motivation to clean. It’s magic!! I realized I’ve never had an actual cleaning routine and for the past ten years or so I’ve been lucky enough to have someone come to my house twice a month to really do the heavy lifting in the cleaning department. I might do that again here in this house one day. But as an introvert who works at home, having someone in my home, even to do something as amazingly wonderful as clean, was difficult for me, this is going to sound so sp ..read more

What To Do If You Miss Your Christmas Tree
Nesting Place Blog

If your house feels a bit blah after taking down your tree, you’re not alone. No need to fret whenever your house looks alarming in any way, it’s just speaking to you, letting you know what it needs. We simply need to learn how to listen.  If you took your tree down and your house feels empty, cold, or even dead (it’s been said!), here are three ways to perk it back up, by replacing something that your Christmas tree was providing.  Lighting is so important in every room of our home and we don’t usually realize the affect it has on us until we bring in a layer of warm cozy light ..read more
