1920s cinematography

For a final project in my cinematography class I am trying to recreate the look of a silent era film in a single shot. I am working with a woman who will be dancing and a man who will be playing the accordion. I am struggling to find a 1920s film that fits a more theatrical look with only two people in it. If anyone has film recommendations that I could reference, that would be amazing, I'm also seeking resources that may help me figure out how to recreate that lighting style ..read more

Shooting projected video on 16mm

Couldn't figure out how to search for this topic with any success, so starting a new thread.  I'm a relative novice in analog filmmaking without a ton of technical expertise or experience. I'm trying to figure out if I can use 16mm 500T to film the projected screening of digital footage in a low-light screening room. Assuming the projected image is bright enough to register workable light meter readings... some questions: 1. Is it okay for there to be any natural light coming in through the windows of the screening room? Or would that mess up the color balance? 2. Could there be any frame ..read more

How does dual native iso function?

I am unable to understand why, let’s say the Sony Venice at EI 3200 with a native setting of  3200 would have less noise than EI 3200 at native 800. I have read the whitepaper https://www.photonstophotos.net/Aptina/DR-Pix_WhitePaper.pdf , but to my understanding, the paper talks more about the benefit of increased dynamic range by running a second capacitor in parallel. How is it possible for cameras with a second native ISO to be more sensitive (higher conversion gain) and have better SNR with less incident photons. All whilst not making the lower ISO rating obsolete? I feel like th ..read more

Recreating a partial window reflection effect
Cinematography Forum

How could you recreate these two shots from Lessons in chemistry, photographed by Jason Oldak. In the first one it seems that the reflection from outside the window is only present where the curtain is. I’m guessing this is because it blocks out the light incident from the room going out, which then allows for the reflection to be more present relative to the darker background. In the second one the reflection looks like a superposition, which may perhaps just be a balancing of inside and outside lighting. However I am curious about other thoughts, opinions, tips and experiences in recreatin ..read more

My SR3 is being weird… it’s only working intermittently and even when it does it seems to only be for a dozen feet then it stops.. Screen goes between showing all zeros to showing feet shot and fps. Also sometimes shows error E 10 on the bottom line (googles it no reference anywhere). Batteries are fully charged. If it’s likely a main board issue I will get a replacement but just don’t want to take the hit if I do t absolutely have to ..read more

Why are shutter-speed calculations not linear?

Maybe I'm overcomplicating this and there is a really simple answer. This has been bothering me for awhile but I never really tried to find out: Example: Lets say my base exposure is 1/1000 = 0.001 seconds If I want to underexpose by a full stop, I would expose for:  1/2000 = 0.0005 seconds Therefore 1 stop underexposed means that I expose for 0.0005 seconds less So far everything seams logical.  However, let's just say I want to underexpose by 1/3 stop: So... if 1 stop under exposure is 0.0005 seconds less, I would expect that 1/3 stop less equals 0.000167 seconds less (0.0005 ..read more

Shooting film with live sound advice

Hi all, advice on the following please. I'm shooting a traditional luthier making a Spanish guitar on 16mm film (500T) with my Aaton XTR XC and I want to record the sounds as he works. 1. Is there any other way of synching sound other than manually (clapperboard) when shooting film? My Aaton XTR only has a battery to run it. Nothing else on it literally, no monitor, nothing (only the physical footage counter on the magazine). 2. Here's how I plan to handle the audio Camera - I have a basic 'sound blimp' to hopefully dampen down the rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr of the magazine. That being sa ..read more
