Today I have confirmed the existence of what I believe to be potentially the first song book of Bill Monroe. I cannot find any information for this book existing. This book here was on eBay and I was able to compare pictures of it to Monroe Brothers song books and this book has the same songs listed in it as the last Monroe Brothers songbook, but has Bill and his newest band members on the front of it. I am wondering if anyone has ever seen this book or know when it might have been printed. I have checked all my books on Monroe and they jump from the Monroe Brothers books to the WSM Song Foli ..read more

I have been doing some research on the Monroe Brothers, Bill and Charlie. Their original combined career and then their deviations after they broke apart. Years ago on the internet there was a site that had full downloads of song books that many of the 1st generation bands had put out through the years. I never took advantage of the history that was preserved there as I should have and now have questions as I do my studying of the Monroe's. I am sure the gentleman who ran that site had almost all of these posted. I was hoping perhaps some people would be willing to post pics of the known Mon ..read more

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has a transcription of possible solos for Cluck Old Hen. I have been playing it for awhile and would like to add a solo. I have searched online but not found any written ones. Baron Collins Hill on Mandolessons does have a vid of adding complexity but not exactly a solo. I purchased a book of Bill Monroe solo transcriptions but it does not contain Cluck Old Hen. Just wondering if anyone has a written solo to this tune? I would be grateful. Thank you ..read more

So, I’m an ELD teacher (English Language Development) and have a student this year who plays professionally with her family in her family’s mariachi band. She, and her whole family have been trained from youth - it’s a family tradition. She plays fiddle and trumpet. When I shared some bluegrass standards with her via YouTube, she said they already play those tunes as part of some of their sets. Her claim is that Mariachi bands have been playing these tunes for a while. I’ve never heard of this. Given, she’s a teenager, and I might be behind the curve, and this could be a local thing she sees ..read more

https://www.americanbluesscene.com/2...a-to-125th-st/ "Not a lot of people talk about the true origins of bluegrass music, but it came from Black people. The banjo, the washtub, all that stuff started with African-Americans. We were playing it before it even had a name. I’m trying to touch on every kind of music I grew up loving and listening to. This is my way of letting people know that I’m not just a soul singer or whatever they think I am. I’m so much more." Swamp Dogg ..read more
