I have been asked if I can help identify the parents of Edmund Hill who was apparently born on March 25,1850 in Lowton Lancashire. Lowton is part of the Wigan and Leigh registration districts. There is a registration for the birth of an Edmund Hill in Leigh in 1850, (2nd quarter), mother's maiden name Howard. The 1851 Census : Piece 2204, Page 16, Folio 111, shows a family living in Lowton - father, John and Mother Alice. I found on Ancestry a parish marriage for John Hill and Alice Howard 14 Oct 1844 at St. Oswald, Winnick. But I cannot see a GRO reference. Lancashire On line Parish Cler ..read more

Hi everyone. Just a quick question that I've been poring over for a while. I found a marriage notice for a pair of relatives in the Bradford Observer dated 28 Jan 1869. It states they were married at St Marie's Chapel, Bradford by the Rev. T. J. Simpson on January 23rd. I know they lived in Little Horton. The relatives in question belonged to an Irish Catholic family. I asked my grandparents, who were born into and married in the Catholic church and have lived in Bradford almost their whole lives, where St Marie's Chapel was and they were both at a loss. They said they'd never heard of St Ma ..read more

I am looking for a George McCannon 46th Regiment of Foot, he was in Hull 1851 service no 1448 but by 1856 his son was in the Dublin Royal Hibernian Military Schools as an army Orphan. George was in the 46th Reg of Foot when he married in Templemore, Ireland in 1843. George death can not be found anywhere and it looks like the death records of the 46th foot are not on any online database. However there is mention in a diary Extracts from an officer’s diary from the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot have been preserved since 1855 which document the gruelling conditions at the frontline of ..read more

I’m looking at a marriage record and “filiam” is crossed out and what looks like “relictam Jacobi Ward”. Does this mean her father abandoned her?…..an unnecessary detail I would have thought or is she saying she’s illegitimate but using her absent father James Ward’s name ..read more

I have just traced an ancestor who is given as being Rev And Bell on the birth record of his son Robert on 19 Feb 1734 in Carlisle, And being short for Andrew, I supposed and did, indeed, find a baptism for an Andrew Bell to a Robert Bell in 1694 which would give him time for theological studies before marriage in 1730. Rev Mr Bell has a burial record on Ancestry for Hesket-in-the-Forest on 2 June 1764, but nothing much else. No record of him at Oxford, none at Cambridge; what a disappointment. And, surprisingly, my local library doesn't stock a copy of Crockford’s Clerical Directory. So I c ..read more

I really hope that someone knows Hesket well as I have a problem with a death there. I received the image today, having ordered that of the only person of the right name in the right R.D. and about the right age. On the 1851 Census, she is 85, which is correct, and living in the Hamlet Old Town of Upper Hesket, with one of her sons, Thomas aged 43. Now, in 1853, she has jumped to being 92! She is one of my 4 x great-grandmothers. But she is the widow of John Bell, a yeoman. However, Bells were two a penny in Cumberland, and John Bells probably two for a ha'penny. The informant is no help as ..read more

Hello, I have an enquiry about the 1871 census please. Thomas Ainscough was born in North Meols, Lancashire in 1825. He married Jane Seddon (who was born in Scarisbrick in 1825)in April 1851 at St Peter and Paul church in Ormskir. Thomas was a Farmer (I do not know whether he was a farm owner or a farm tenant - is there anyway I can find out about this?). I am having difficulty looking at the 1871 census record and hope someone will be able to help me. Just above the entry of Thomas Ainscough's is a line of handwriting that I cannot decipher, I can read the first two words 'End of' and the ..read more

I have a compass ((I thought it was a pocket watch before I opened it. Inside it has been very crudely engraved: 1036 Serg Barrow 11th RF France 1915-1916 1917. I have found that the 11th RF was the 11th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. I intend to send this item to the RF museum or archives as I have done previously with other military items. Can anyone help in advising if I might be able to find more info on this person, and if so where to look. I realise I don't have a great deal to go on ..read more
