One of the CSC’s initiatives to address the issue of diversity below the line in the camera arts is the Field of View Mentorship Program that aims to make the cinematography profession more inclusive by fostering diversity behind the camera. It pairs DPs of varying levels with those with more experience to push through the celluloid ceiling that exists for women, BIPOC individuals and other underrepresented groups. “My dad’s love for blockbusters, especially Indiana Jones and James Bond, meant that my family watched a lot of Hollywood classics ever since I was young in Hong Kong,” says Melody Chan, one of 15 interns that took part in CSC’s Future is Calling Intern Initiative through 2022 and 2023.
