We spoke to Michelle (pictured below) about her childhood growing up in Kenya and what inspired her wonderful design for our limited edition ‘The Future is Feminist’ tote bags.  Hi Michelle. What are some of the inspirations behind your art? “I love stories and all story-telling devices, so movies and books are a constant source of inspiration. Folk-tales have always been a particular favourite of mine and I love the illustrations (which are often a bit odd and spooky) that tend to accompany these cautionary stories. I also find nature very inspiring and try to incorporate a little piece ..read more

The role of the press has become more significant today than ever before. Womankind believes it is important to have a feminist approach to media to allow representation of women and girls and ensure their voices are heard and their stories are told.   The role of women in media- journalists, artists and content creators has evolved over the years, and we have seen how crucial it is to have women cover stories about women and girls that are usually unheard. As media platforms continue expanding, so has the spread of misinformation and fake news on online and offline platforms. By examinin ..read more

Around the world, feminist organisations and movements are pushing for gender equality, so that women, girls and people of all genders can live with joy, choice and dignity. Womankind and partners are a vital part of this movement, working to end violence against women, ensure they have a seat at decision-making tables, and championing women’s economic rights.  Despite the vital role they play, feminist movements are massively underfunded, receiving less than 1 per cent of Official Development Assistance globally. Organisations and networks that work to sustain feminist movements often op ..read more

I love following media as I believe it is a reflection of society. When media reports blame victims and survivors in moments of trauma, it’s often a gendered reflection of how society perceives victims and survivors. More importantly, the culture of erasure and exploitation of people of colour and non-confirming folks. Trans and gender diverse movements were erased from movement history until the 1990s. Biopics showcase how queer erasure was (and still is) a common occurrence among Black communities.  The consequences of erasure can easily be measured: loss of income, opportunity cost and ..read more

Womankind Worldwide adds a voice to this year’s International Women’s Day through the second iteration of the #EverydayFeminism campaign.  Inspired by Laura Bates’ Everyday Sexism, we spotlight inspiring stories of five feminists from Kenya, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, South Africa and Nepal who are committed to making a difference in their communities and contributing to a gender equal world.   The campaign demonstrates that acts of feminism, however small – especially at a time like this when we are witnessing a drawback on women’s rights around the world – can contribute to change. ‘’Feminism is for everybody.’’ bell hooks.  What is feminism and why are we still talking about it especially now?  At a time when there’s so much regression, erosion and pushback on human rights across the world these are thoughts that may linger.  This question is also pertinent in 2024 ahead of major elections in different parts of the world from the US, UK, Rwanda and South Africa with close to 4 billion people expected to cast their vote and shape the political landscape.  As we bear witness to the scenes coming out of Gaza, to the continuing Taliban regime in Afghanis ..read more

Strong, diverse women’s movements and women’s rights organisations have the power to contribute to a just, equal and equitable world for girls, women and people of all genders. We have seen how solidarity, collective action and allyship can seed the ground in leading solutions to some of the most pressing social and political problems across the world.  However, adequate resourcing for women’s rights organisations is still a barrier in catalysing action and promoting gender equality. Many organisations are often operating in survival mode, unable to execute their own agendas based on know ..read more
