CHICAGO — Treadmills were first used by animals and humans for work on farms and in mills to grind grain. In 1818, some smart guy realized they could be used as a form of punishment! An engineer in Britain had the idea to use them at Brixton prison in hopes that it could ‘reform offenders by teaching them habits of industry.’ But the whole point was that it was pointless. They weren't grinding grain, the treadmills were attached to weights and they had to walk for six hours a day, though they did get breaks.
