Hello To All! Has anyone had experience good, bad, or otherwise applying Oracle 12c v12.1.0.2 Quarterly CPU Database/OJVM/JDK patches in Windows (any version). The database is hanging for us when we do it, we end up recovering the database to a point back-in-time. Usual SQL-Plus commands such as shutdown immediate and shutdown abort do not work, instead showing ORA-01033 oracle-initiation-or-shutdown-in-progress error message, even for shutdown abort. ps -ef is not an option since this is Windows and not unix/linux. If you were able to successfully apply the patches please let us know, includi ..read more

Why should the foreign key column be indexed ?
Oracle Community

DB Version : 19c  In Oracle, is it always a good idea to index a foreign key column ? Is the below mentioned reason the primary reason to index foreign keys in Oracle ? "As a general rule, the need to define a foreign key implies that there will be SQL statements that require a join of the parent and child tables. Without a foreign key index, this SQL could not perform a nested loops join, and a more expensive sort merge join might be required" select cust_name, order_details from cust c, ordor o, where c.cust_id = o.cust_id; Source: http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_foreign_ ..read more

What impact on DB if a NFS file system containing RMAN backups down?
Oracle Community

We have a NFS file system mounted on DB server, and it contains RMAN backups data and backups data only, nothing else, no control file, or any other Oracle data. If this NFS file system went down: Would it cause DB inaccessible assuming there is no DB backups / restoration running? Would it prevent me to start up DB, or cause startup process to hang? These questions may too basic to you, but, I am not DBA. Thanks! 1 ..read more
