Over the past couple weeks here at Divetech we have had multiple reports of a most exciting nature: the Caribbean Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea) is back! With their compelling colour-changing displays and their impressive schooling formations, these squids have been long-time favourites of divers around the Caribbean. However, the squiggly cephalopods have been largely absent from our shores for around five months, having departed last year October. But where do they go? And what do we truly know about these tentacled molluscs? Description Describing the Reef Squid is the easy part. F ..read more

Here at Divetech we are constantly getting calls, emails, and people stopping in asking about Jo. So, who is Jo, and why are all these people asking about her? Well, along with owning and operating Divetech for the past 8 years, Joanna Mikutowicz (pronounced mik-a-TOE-its) is a PADI Course Director, two-time Women’s Diver Hall of Fame nominee, baby turtle rescuer, and all-around incredible human. She’s quite famous around the island and within the dive industry - as much for her accomplishments as for her kindness and generosity - so for this month’s blog I thought it would be fun to sit ..read more

Divetech
by Kelly Carpenter

One of the most exciting and graceful marine animals to see underwater is the incredible Spotted Eagle Ray (aetobatus narinari). We are so lucky to have them in our waters here on Grand Cayman and there is a thrilling, humbling feeling that comes with watching these beautiful creatures glide through the water. Spotted eagle rays are well recognized and much loved - so much that you can frequently find them in art, dive apparel, tattoos, and even Disney movies! In all honesty, I thought this would be an easy blog post to write - spotted eagle rays are so popular that there has got to be t ..read more

Updated December 2023. Originally written in 2017 (and first updated in 2021), we've now fully revamped our popular list of staff-approved restaurants to reflect what's changed in the last 6 years. Enjoy! Grand Cayman is not only known for its stellar diving, but also for its ,diverse culinary scene. When looking online for restaurants it’s almost overwhelming to try and decide between the massive amount of options. It’s therefore no surprise that one of the most commonly asked questions of our staff is “Where should we go to eat?” We get this question so often we decided to make a blog post ..read more

Either way, you’ve got an underwater camera and now you're keen to share your underwater footage with everyone you know, especially after watching Blue Planet for the 1000th time. For some reason though, your pictures and video don't come out quite as you imagined them. National Geographic hasn't been in touch and even your b ..read more

Hi everyone! Unless you’ve been living on another planet you are probably aware that the year 2020 brought some crazy changes throughout the world, including an unexpectedly long hiatus from our much-beloved blog here at Divetech. We all lived through the pandemic so I’ll keep the summary of this part brief - Covid sucked and Cayman shut down…for almost 2 years. From March 2020 to late November 2021, the Cayman Islands were closed for tourism and the Divetech staff instead found themselves getting creative as everyone’s career suddenly and drastically changed. Flying to Cayman in a COVID world
Divetech
by Tony Land

A few weeks ago, I took a trip to Florida. My firs trip off "the rock" for 2 years. Flying back to the Cayman Islands has given me a first hand glimpse at what the process is actually like with COVID restrictions and protocols in place. In our previous blog, we wrote about how to apply to get permission to travel to the islands. In this article, I'm going to share what my experiences were in actually going through the process of flying down. Checking in The worst part of flying out of Miami (and the most dangerous part) is actually driving through the city traffic to get to the airport. On arr ..read more

A profile - Ragime Powery, PADI Dive Instructor
Divetech
by Serena Evans

Ragime Powery - Caymanian dive instructor, and native of West Bay talks about his experiences working for Divetech. I grew up on and around the water and have been driving boats since I was 15. As a kid I never really considered what I might do as a career as I always knew that wherever I worked it would involve the ocean and marine life. My grandmother lived opposite Cobalt Coast in West Bay (where Divetech was based a few years ago) and I used to swim in the pool there every weekend. Divetech staff would lend me fins & a mask every time I showed up, and eventually gave me my own equipme ..read more
