Vessel traffic was suspended in and out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the nation’s busiest ports, after a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge and it collapsed early Tuesday morning, sending at least seven cars into the Patapsco River. State transportation officials gave no estimate on when the port might reopen to vessels or the immediate impact to shipping. Officials, who spoke amid a continuing and massive search and rescue mission, said the port was not shut down and remained open to process trucks inside terminals. “Vessel traffic into and out of the port of Baltimore is ..read more

By DEE-ANN DURBIN (AP Business Writer) Egg prices are at near-historic highs in many parts of the world as the spring holidays approach, reflecting a market scrambled by disease, high demand and growing costs for farmers. It’s the second year in a row consumers have faced sticker shock ahead of Easter and Passover, both occasions in which eggs play prominent roles. While global prices are lower than they were at this time last year, they remain elevated, said Nan-Dirk Mulder, a senior global specialist with Dutch financial firm RaboBank’s RaboResearch Food and Agribusiness division. It is no secret that Jena Griswold, Colorado’s secretary of state since 2019, has a major problem with former President Donald Trump. A quick scroll through her account on X, formerly known as Twitter, reveals dozens of condemnations of the former president, with Griswold repeatedly calling him an “oath-breaking insurrectionist” and a “threat to democracy.” “It is up to American voters to save our country next November and vote for democracy over chaos,” she posted on Nov. 30. Those sentiments find broad support in Colorado politics, which largely has been hostile to Trump. But the outspokenne ..read more

If you haven’t already booked your travel to see the solar eclipse on April 8, it could be too late to get decent reservations for flights, hotels, and rental cars — or it could cost an exorbitant amount. The total solar eclipse will pass over North America — including parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada — with varying degrees of darkness on April 8. In what is called “the path of totality,” the sky will go completely dark for a brief time; other places, like Denver, will see a partial eclipse. The rush is still on for people to be in that path and experience the strange moment when ..read more

After a marathon committee hearing, Colorado Democrats’ bill to ban the sale of semi-automatic rifles and other so-called assault weapons cleared its first hurdle early Wednesday morning and now is poised to pass the full House. The measure, House Bill 1292, passed the House Judiciary Committee on a 7-3 party-line vote. The wide margin came 11 months after the same Democratic-majority committee narrowly voted to kill a similar bill. This year’s proposal would ban the sale, purchase, transfer or manufacture of “assault weapons.” The bill’s definition of those firearms includes semi-automatic ri ..read more

Douglas County plans to launch a legal challenge of recent state laws that bar local law enforcement in Colorado from closely cooperating with federal immigration officials on the detention and incarceration of immigrants. Leaders of the conservative south metro county have characterized the legal challenge and a proposed ordinance aimed at preventing the busing of migrants to its communities as their response to the ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. One commissioner stated that “our first responsibility is to our citizens who are already here legally.” Douglas County’s measures, which ..read more

By MEG KINNARD (Associated Press) COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have officially secured the requisite numbers of delegates to be considered their parties’ presumptive nominees. It was a foreseeable outcome. Biden faced token opposition in the Democratic primary. Several high-profile Republicans ran against Trump but didn’t come close to knocking him off course in his third straight Republican bid. Here is a look at what that means, what’s changed, and what still needs to happen before Biden and Trump can drop “presumptive” and just be their parties ..read more

By KEVIN FREKING (Associated Press) WASHINGTON — A bill that could lead to a ban of the popular video app TikTok in the United States is expected to pass the House on Wednesday as lawmakers act on concerns that the company’s ownership structure is a threat to national security.
