All of Algonquin Trip Reports, Campsite Reviews & More All of Algonquin Trip Reports, Campsites & More Year in Review (2023) The Moosie Awards (Part two) Welcome to Part Two of the 2023 Moosie Awards. Part One started things off with awards in categories like Best Waterfall, Thunderiest Thunderbox and Worst Portage. Those categories are fine and all, but they’re not the reason you come to the Moosies. They’re the Moosie equivalent of the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. You’re happy to see someone win, but you also wish they’d play off that acceptance speech just a bit faster ..read more

All of Algonquin Trip Reports, Campsite Reviews & More All of Algonquin Trip Reports, Campsites & More Year in Review (2023) Lessons Learned As of the end of the 2023 tripping season I’ve made it to 337 of the 530(ish) lakes in Algonquin that are on my list. I’ve finished 60 canoe trips and paddled over 2,000 KM since I started this thing back in 2016. I’ve had incredible moments and incredibly terrifying moments. I’ve jumped off cliffs, swam in waterfalls, cursed across portages and paddled a perfectly flat Cedar Lake not once but twice. That’s pretty awesome, right? I imag ..read more

Pen Lake 2023

My trip reports are getting too long. Don’t believe me? Ask the 10,000 word novel that was my most recent write up of a four day trip out of Cedar Lake. Four days! That’s 2,500 words a day.  There are only 1,440 minutes in a day, so I’m averaging 1.74 words per minute of trip. That seems excessive. So, this report is going to be shorter. I promise. (I can’t make any promises). As it turns out, a two-night base camping trip to Pen Lake is the perfect option if you’re looking for a relaxing couple of days at the height of Algonquin’s fall colours, and a good way to trim your word count ..read more

Cedar Loop 2023: Hogan, Philips, Clamshell and More!

Five days before my Labour Day canoe trip out of Cedar Lake, I looked at the map and realized I’d made a mistake. This was my annual fall buddies’ trip. I’ve been going out with some combination of the same group of guys every year since 2016, and it’s one of the trips I look forward to most each year. The routes are usually challenging enough, without being a slog. The company is awesome and the time of year is ideal for tripping. Combine all that together, and you’ve got the recipe for a great trip. And, when you’ve got a great recipe, the last thing you want to do is screw up the ingredi ..read more

Lake names are important. The minute you see that name on the map you start to form a mental picture of the lake, whether you mean to or not. Sometimes, that mental picture is mundane or exceedingly accurate (or both! Hi Wet Lake!). Sometimes that mental picture is nowhere near reality (There are like zero big cats on Panther Lake. Not even an overfed housecat).  Sometimes that mental picture might put you off visiting a spot you absolutely should be visiting (Clamshell is about as uninteresting a name as I can think of, which is too bad because it’s attached to a very interesting lake ..read more

My oldest daughter loves to trip. Loves it. The Sunbeam Circuit – Map Courtesy of Unlostify Maps I’ll tell you a story. This summer she did two weeks at Camp Wapomeo, a girls’ camp located on the sunny shores of Canoe Lake. As part of her session, she went out on a four-day canoe trip. Her cabin’s route was the Sunbeam Circuit. First night Burnt Island, second night Sunbeam, third night Tom Thompson. It’s a great route. Burnt, Sunbeam and Tom are all nice lakes and you get a little bit of everything the Park has to offer along the way (including a visit to the soul sucking quagmire that is ..read more
