The UK Warehousing Association has reacted with frustration to the publication of the Migration Advisory Committee’s (MAC) review of the Shortage Occupation List. Forklift truck drivers and warehouse operatives are not even mentioned in the report. Having led a co-ordinated campaign during the review period in 2022 demonstrating the critical labour shortages being suffered by the warehousing and logistics sector and despite submitting a formal request on behalf of its members, the trade body says its recommendations have been overlooked. Another possibility is to relocate to a new and larger warehouse but leaving aside the costs and complexity involved the current lack of available new-build sites can make any such move impractical. Before making any decisions, growing businesses wou ..read more

Escalating costs and continued demand for warehouse space are placing ever greater pressure on organisations to optimise existing warehouse efficiency. In a pressurised environment, it is often hard to ensure robust processes are always followed. If parcel labels are inadvertently damaged by overstretched staff rushing to load pallets, ba ..read more

A persistent shortage of labour remains a major issue for the UK warehousing and logistics sector. Automation and robotics are proven to help businesses significantly improve productivity and increase efficiency. But automating manual tasks is only half of the story. As fulfilment demand continues to increase, the way warehouses operate is changing. Still, a lights-out, or fully automated, warehouse operation is a long way off for many companies and SMEs. In most cases, robotics and automation will remain complementary to the work of human employees. Yet, not enough is being done to help comp ..read more
