Connecticut Scrimmage Fees ...

In 2016-17, for the first time, the CIAC required payment for all scrimmages (in all sports in Connecticut). Coaches were having difficulty finding officials for scrimmages, especially for some sports like lacrosse, ice hockey, and field hockey. Previously scrimmage officials would sometimes get a slice of pizza, a ham and cheese grinder, a T-shirt, ten dollars cash for gas and laundry, or, usually nothing at all. No wonder coaches were having difficulty finding officials for scrimmages. Also in 2016-17, my local board began to use Arbiter to assign scrimmages (no longer voluntary). Previ ..read more

Just got picked up to work NCAA division II men's basketball this fall and was encouraged to get into the rules/case book(s) as soon as possible...especially rule 11 with the monitor stuff. In searching (both on NCAA's site and Amazon) I can't seem to find a 24-25 rules book...just a 23-24. Any input on when the NCAA typically makes the newest rules books available, or should I just grab last years and make myself aware of the new rules changes ..read more

Gregg Becker, the current Rules Interpreter of the Wood County Basketball Officials Association has put together a 38 page Officials Guide/Handbook (5-1/2"x8-1/2"). It covers the Officials Pre-Game as well as a number of topics regarding basketball officiating including information about the 2024-25 Rules. He is selling the book at cost ($10) plus shipping (U.S. Mail) and handling ($2.50). It is a well written tome that should be in every H.S. basketball official's bag. He does accept Venmo. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/qoCTx6nskMDPvv2u/ I'm FIBA certified and having a discussion with an NFHS referee. I'm pretty sure our rules regarding hopping on the same foot is aligned. But he claims because the player gather the ball with both feet on the ground and is progressing, he still has two steps after. Pretty sure there is no gather step in NFHS. So if this official deems the ball was gathered with both hands, when he lifted his left foot, doesn't that make his right foot the pivot? And then he lifted and landed on pivot. Isn't that an obvious travel ..read more

Shoulder Width Screen ???
Officiating.com » Basketball

IAABO (not the NFHS) came out with an interesting ruling on a recent "Make The Call" play: For a player to establish a legal screening position, They must ensure their feet are no more than shoulder‑width apart (NFHS 4-40). In this play, the screener's feet are clearly wider than shoulder width, which would seem to support a team-control foul being ruled on this play. The NFHS Rules Committee recently approved a new rule interpretation that supports a screen to be legal, (even if the screener's stance is wider than shoulder width), if the only contact that occurs is on the screener's torso ..read more

Not Beckoned Technical Foul ???

IAABO (not the NFHS) came out with an interesting ruling on a recent "Make The Call" play: When bench personnel (head coach, assistant coach, trainer, etc) enter the court without being beckoned to attend to an injured player, it will lead to the injured player needing to be replaced by a substitute. The head coach may request a 30-second or 60-second time-out to attempt to keep the injured player in the game. If the situation can be resolved by the conclusion of the time-out, the player may continue. Should a technical foul be ruled? Several respondents indicated they would rule a technic ..read more

New Sgnal

I was working at a high school camp that had a JUCO assignor that ran the camp. I was to present the New Rules for 2024-2025. I was talking about the new flopping rules with the definition. I gave this presentation multiple times on Friday and this was Saturday. I gave the first presentation of the day and one of the clinicians who happened to be in the room, looked up the signal chart for the NF. Lo and behold, there is a signal for the new flopping rule. When did this happen? I was shocked. I was telling the groups there was no signal yet, but one might be added. Did anyone announce this o ..read more

As many of you know, I am two months into my basketball officiating/baseball-softball umpiring effort (Which appears to what will be a two, at least, year project.) to organize all of the crapola that I have accrued for the last fifty plus years. If anyone has a copy of the 2015-16 NFHS Basketball Pre-Season Guide published by NASO/Referee, please contact me via Private Message. I cannot find my copy and would like to acquire a copy of it. Thanks, MTD, Sr ..read more
