SHARON December 24, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR As this Christmas season approaches, I have 22 incredibly dear friends, memories of the Middle East, a completely new perspective of Jesus’s life and birth, a sincere respect for those who live in a tumultuous country fraught with war, and a much stronger faith in God. And no, I’m not trying to replicate the 12 days of Christmas, yet I have been careening toward this season with a build-up of enthusiasm. Embarrassing as this is to admit, this year is unusual. I normally have lists for every sort ..read more

SHARON December 11, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR Yesterday I was finishing up my Saturday house cleaning when my phone lit up with text messages in all caps. Unbeknownst to me, those gray windless clouds outside were hiding a secret. The secret hovered above, barreling toward us several miles away. My daughter’s family crowded into their first-floor closet and same for my friends. My stepdaughter’s family filed inside my home where we spread out before the basement TV to watch the real time coverage of a bright red screen of tornado clouds spa ..read more

SHARON October 22, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR After a scenic drive to Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, our tour group stood before the Mount of Beatitudes, where we remembered the text of the Sermon on the Mount. It was there that I felt a strong feeling of awe all around. Parrots, butterflies, and varieties of chirping birds permeated the scene of stately palms and floral arrangements topped by the distant shimmering waters of the Sea of Galilee, a line of mountainous terrain capping the view. Every sense available pulle ..read more

SHARON October 7, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR Today was a spiritually moving and uplifting day. Despite the upsetting conflict erupting in the West Bank of Israel, the last couple of days have been memories that made a big drop in my bucket list. First, we explored one of the most exciting archeological digs in Israel, the palace-fortress and final resting place of Herod the Great. In Bethlehem, we visited the cave where Jesus was born and the Church of the Nativity. That was an extremely popular area that enlightened my understanding of what ..read more

SHARON October 5, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR My mother, a quiet and humble lady, visited the Holy Land decades ago. Now that she has gone on, I feel a deep connection with her spiritual journey as I explore the very path of Jesus myself this week. Our church group has come on this trip with reverence and a spirit of adventure. The young and the young hearted have marveled at the baptismal site of Qasr el Yehud, where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The experience took on a personal meaning when our pastors sprinkled us and encouraged ..read more

SHARON September 18, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR When my pastor, Reverend Adam Shourds, asked me to briefly share with our church what community meant to me, I had to give it some serious thought. Although I attend church regularly, I don’t have the opportunity to get to know many people beyond the friendly handshakes week in and week out. And like so many, I’ve given little thought to my support system and influence within the community. I just follow my routine and manage my schedule every day, hoping to get it all done. But now, I see thin ..read more

SHARON August 3, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR Whether you have a lighter workload in the summer, or the pace is frantic, opportunities exist to shake things up this season. Research (and common sense) tells us that time outdoors is beneficial for physical and mental health. Simply taking up the same activity in a different place can boost mood and improve brain function. Some of my favorite switch-ups include reading in a hammock or swing instead of the sofa, doing yoga stretching on the porch or deck instead of my workout space, and walking t ..read more

SHARON April 7, 2023 SHARE:   FACEBOOK  TWITTER  PINTEREST  TUMBLR April is the month devoted to several important causes that are near and dear to my heart. As a school psychologist and former case worker for special needs children, I have found autism to be a challenge for many children and families. Chances are, you have known individuals who have challenges on the autism spectrum. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020) report that an average of 1 in 110 children within our American borders are diagnosed on the autism spectrum.  That may ..read more
