The FASEB Journal publishes international, transdisciplinary research covering all fields of biology at every level of organization: atomic, molecular, cell, tissue, organ, organismic, and population. While the journal strives to include research that cuts across the biological sciences, it also considers submissions that lie within one field but may have implications for other fields as well...

Mutations in Pon1 gene underlie aging, CVD, and impairments of gastrointestinal systems, which are linked to gut microbiome. As the potential role of Pon1 in modulating intestinal microbiota and serum metabolites is poorly understood, Pon1 KO and OE mice were examined in present study. We found that the host's Pon1 affects the resident species, especially by altering the diversity and taxonomic composition of intestinal flora, which potentially contributes to development of diseases ascribed to the variations in Pon1 gene.

When skeletal muscles are stimulated by injury, the absence of Islr in satellite cells upregulates the level of Sparc protein, thereby activating the p-ERK1/2 signaling pathway, making satellite cells more inclined to undergo asymmetric division.
Abstract
Satellite cells (SCs) are adult muscle stem cells responsible for muscle regeneration after acute and chronic muscle injuries. The balance between stem cell self-renewal and differentiation determines the kinetics and efficiency of skeletal muscle regeneration. This study assessed the function of Islr in SC asymmetric division. The deletion ..read more

This graphical abstract illustrates our study's focus on Mn and Zn homeostatic control in mammalian cells. An increase in cellular Mn decreased the expression of Zn homeostatic proteins, including metallothionein and ZNT1, indicating decreased cellular Zn. In contrast, increased cellular Zn increased the expression of Mn homeostatic protein TMEM165, indicating decreased cellular Mn. These results indicate that Zn and Mn inversely interact with each other and that intracellular Mn and Zn homeostasis closely interact in mammalian cells.

This systematic review and meta-analysis found a significant moderate positive effect of acute resistance exercise for IL-6 and IL-1ra and a small to moderate effect for IL-15 and TNF-α. For IL-10, no significant effect was observed. Due to no data, meta-analyses for IL-7, TGF-β1, and FKN could not be performed. No moderators of the effects were detected for all tested myokines. Abstract
Myokines, released from the muscle, enable communication between the working muscles and other tissues. Their release during physical exercise is assumed to depend on immune ..read more

The calcium-binding protein S100a6 was expressed in ameloblasts. S100a6 maintained calcium levels in dental epithelial cells and differentiated ameloblasts. S100a6 knockdown in ameloblasts reduced intracellular calcium concentration and the expression of ameloblast marker genes. Furthermore, S100a6 knockdown resulted in differentiation into epidermis via inhibition of NT-4-induced activation of ERK signaling in dental epithelial cells.

Exercise can increase the secretion of IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-13, and other cytokines to inhibit the production of osteoclasts and enhance bone mass. Exercise can inhibit the secretion of TNF-α and IL-6, reduce inflammatory reactions, promote bone formation, and enhance bone density. Exercise can also inhibit RANKL, promote OPG, and promote bone formation. Therefore, it can be determined that suitable exercise can play an active role in osteoimmunology and is of great significance to the treatment of osteoporosis.

Bones can form the scaffolding of the body, support the organism, coo ..read more

Neurotensin (NTS), a paracrine mediator of ovulation, regulates vascular permeability changes during angiogenesis of the ovulatory follicle. Permeability of follicular microvascular endothelial cells is controlled by adherens junctions, primarily N-cadherin (CDH2) and K-cadherin (CDH6) junctions. NTS acts directly at endothelial cells to decrease permeability in a CDH2- and CDH6-dependent manner.
Abstract
Neurotensin (NTS) is a 13-amino acid peptide which is highly expressed in the mammalian ovary in response to the luteinizing hormone surge. Antibody neutralization of NTS in the ovulatory f ..read more

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds to an infection but subsequently triggers widespread inflammation and impaired blood flow, which often causes multiple organ dysfunction either one by one or simultaneously. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, we showed the commonly disturbed pathways and key regulators of the liver–kidney comorbidity after sepsis is linked to energy metabolism and consumption. Our data provide open resources to understand liver and kidney communications as they work to fight infection and maintain homeostasis.
Abstract
