We bought a house prior to it being built. After it was done the problems we had inside and outside were unbelievably. I started to think that we were just out of the loop and this is normal for new house track home construction. Then I started looking closely at the siding and referred to the installation instructions from the website and it was all wrong. From what I can see most of the contractors here in NWA they are not following all the guidelines. The homes built by our builder they... I'd like to talk about James Hardie siding ..read more

Hi All, I'm working on installing baseboards on my walls and I've come across a wall with an angle of 177 degrees. It curves just enough such that there's a gap that forms between the baseboard and the wall. I really want to avoid kerf cutting the baseboard because honestly, I'm not that good. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how to tackle this problem. Thanks ..read more

Finish for aquarium cabinet

Hey all, I'm very much a non-expert on finish carpentry but I do dabble from time to time. I'm getting a slightly larger aquarium and need a larger stand than what I have currently, and store prices are OUTRAGEOUS for even the most basic stands that won't hold up to the test of time. The tank is 31 gallons so figuring water, stone substrate, countertop weight, then accessories on the one internal shelf, it will carry at most 350 pounds. I'm planning to use 3/4" birch veneer plywood for... Finish for aquarium cabinet ..read more

Advice on sliding cabinet trays, small area

Hi, I'd like some advice on some sliding cabinet trays. I have 3 small spaces that go underutilized, you can't easily get to things stored there. Approx 11 by 13 I found a place that does custom trays (Cabinet Doors - DIY Cabinet Refacing Supplies | Replacement Cabinet Doors @ Cabinet Doors Depot). Will not be accessed all the time I'd think. I'm gathering ideas for sliding them, and what to do with stored stuff right next to them that... Advice on sliding cabinet trays, small area ..read more

Sliding cabinet trays, large area, but cabinet separator in the way

I actually have 2 rolling tray situations, thought I'd separate the threads. Lots of space at the back that is hard to get to. What I'd actually like to do here is to cut the middle cabinet separator out, and attach it to one of the doors. This would open up the entire area for slide out shelving. Not sure I can convince my wife of that. I probably need to reinforce the area in case the divider is load bearing. So, second choice is 10.5" x 23" inch trays, 4 of them, with slides... Framing To Suspend Island Hood Vent

I am installing a vent hood for an outdoor kitchen. It is about 160 pounds. I opened the drywall in the patio cover so I have access to the area between the ceiling and the roof. What Im planning to do is use the support (screenshot included) that I found online by putting it between the rafters (24 inch OC). My home builder said to add a 2X4 along the joist to strengthen it, then add a 2X4 from the joist to the rafter because the joists were not designed to support a downward force so... Load bearing closet header?

I am updating our mud room and went to remove the closet. The closet jutts out into the garage space, open on both sides and the footer (I believe) is under the front wall, not the back wall of the closet. I was not expecting to see a doubled 2x11 header above this closet door. The header makes me question if this wall is load bearing, but it only has one jack and one king. Is this just the robust way they built houses in the 70's or is this structural? I... Load bearing closet header ..read more
