Psychotherapy certifications: The good, the bad, and the grifty

Setting aside 95% of the PESI catalogue for trainings in internal polyvagal complex intergenerational trauma systems therapy that the biased science can't possibly measure, how necessary are psychotherapy certifications for responsible, independent practice? For instance, if I've received training and supervision in both cognitive therapy and mindfulness skills, do I really need to now become certified in mindfulness based cognitive therapy or can I just put those two things together after... Hey everyone, In my anticipation of the process I made my APPIC/AAPI profile a tad too early. I have linked my Time2Track to it and obviously, it is considering me for this (2023-2024) application cycle when I will be applying next year (2024-2025 application cycle). Will this update by itself when the time comes, or have I screwed myself over/need to contact someone? Thank you ..read more

Dissertation Grant Funding - Is it worth it?

PhD student here wanting to obtain some form of funding for my dissertation. Can anyone speak into their experience of applying for an F31 and if it is worth it to be competitive for a more research oriented internship and post doc? I am already in the data collection phase of my project and will still be collecting data next year, but given how drawn out the grant application process is, I'm not sure if I am too far along in my research. It would be nice to start compensating my... Read more ..read more

Career change options

I have been working as a psychotherapist for the past 15 years but would like to do something different. I also teach occasionally as an adjunct however do not see this as a main career due to the low pay and precarious working conditions. What are other work options with a doctorate in psychology in the US? I am leaning towards assessment, however I have never focused on assessment so I would probability need further training. Where would be a good starting point? I looked at Pearson's... Read more ..read more

Hi! I'm currently deciding between La Salle University and University of San Francisco for my PsyD Program (I know, opposite ends of the country...). I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the reputations of the school and which would be better in terms of strength of the program, reputation, and opportunity. Or if anyone attends/attended these programs and has any thoughts - let me know! Thank you so much! All thoughts appreciated ..read more

Some things NOT to do

From a recent case: -Don't refer to yourself with a made-up title, especially one that is misleading about your licensure status (e.g., "Licensed Clinical Psychologist"). Especially don't do so if you are not an appropriately Licensed Psychologist-Provider who is properly trained and credentialed to complete a diagnostic assessment, but rather hold a different license (e.g., Licensed Educational Psychologist) that does not allow for independent diagnostic evals outside of an educational... Red Pill Spaces

Any of you worked with anyone (most likely males) who have brought up taking the red pill? I've had 4-5 male zoomer patients who subscribe to it as if it was a religious doctrine, namely the hypergamy stuff [the historical tendency for women to date across and up], evolutionary psych - David Bus (which....I think there is at least in some small part some legitimacy to). However, it also feels like it's getting into incel territory at times, real doomer/hopeless spaces, where some simple... Read more ..read more

College enrollment crisis

So, this popped up in my email recently and I was curious to get opinions here. While this is certainly not good for academia and will likely lead to fewer PhD programs and more PsyDs due to lack of funding, I think the rest of it is rather unsurprising and due to the field being out of touch with the needs of graduates and clinicians. A lot of older folks with cushy jobs maybe panicking about how well their 401ks are funded. Maybe the focus should be on more straight-forward, available... Read more ..read more
