CBD for Wound Care

One of the least mentioned uses for CBD is for wound care. In a previous post I mentioned a study in the Journal of Experimental Dermatology (published May 19, 2021), where broad spectrum topical cannabinoid application had near miraculous results on otherwise untreatable leg ulcers. I’d like to expand on the properties of cannabinoids that make them a good choice for minor abrasions, insect bites, and burns. Both THC and CBD have antibiotic properties, and some of the minor cannabinoids such as CBC and CBG do as well. Applying a cannabinoid topical balm can have the same anti-bacterial effect ..read more

Organic vs Inorganic, what is the difference?
Vermont Organic Science

We all know what organic food, is right? There is a big difference between organic vs inorganic foods. Well, to be certified USDA organic, foods must be grown naturally, with no added chemicals. The same is true of manufactured products such as maple syrup or CBD extract. Everything that goes into these products must be organic, and all processing must be done with food or pharmaceutical grade equipment in a controlled setting. SOPs are required as well as equipment cleaning logs. Yearly inspections are performed, and they are quite thorough. The certification and compliance protocols are rath ..read more

What exactly is decarboxylation?
Vermont Organic Science

One hears and reads about decarboxylation all the time in the cannabis industry. How many of you knows what it is? How it’s done? Why? Well here we are doing a deep dive into the chemistry of decarboxylation. A carboxyl group is a -COOH unit. The hydrogen (H) is acidic, and readily dissociates from the oxygen (O) it is attached to. So, all carboxyl groups are acids, which means they have a pH in water below 7. THCA and CBDA are both carboxylic acids. Carboxylic acids are ubiquitous in nature. The one you are most familiar with is vinegar, which is a water solution of acetic acid. Acetic acid i ..read more

RSO – What is Rick Simpson Oil?
Vermont Organic Science

Rick Simpson oil (RSO) was developed by, surprise, Rick Simpson. Rick developed skin cancer in 2004, and having read about the healing powers of topical cannabinoids, decided to make his own topical oil to apply to his skin lesions. The cancer disappeared, and Rick became an advocate for cannabis as medicine. He became mildly famous for this, and his work is immortalized in the name of his oil. RSO can be considered one of the earliest home-grown cannabis extraction methods. It is very simple: soak cannabis in a solvent, filter, evaporate, then decarb. (Actually, all extraction methods follow ..read more

Cannabis HPLC Testing

Amongst the issues facing the cannabis and hemp industries are inconsistencies with testing. Proper assays of potency are critical to many facets of the field. Accurate flower assays provide information to the consumer on the strength and cannabinoid content of the material they will smoke. Flower assays are also used to determine extraction efficiencies and yields. We use in-house HPLC Testing and will discuss our methods in this post. The extract must also be carefully assayed in order to produce products from it. Cannabis and hemp products must conform to local regulations regarding maximum ..read more

Topical cannabinoids for wound healing
Vermont Organic Science
by Joe Payack

Significant new data from the Journal of Experimental Dermatology provides convincing evidence that topical cannabinoids can almost miraculously cure severe leg ulcers. Here is the abstract (published May 19, 2021), with my commentary afterword: Venous Leg Ulcers are highly prevalent lower limb integumentary wounds that remain challenging to heal despite the use of evidence-based compression therapies. A multitude of adjuvant treatments have been studied but none have demonstrated enough efficacy to gain adoption into treatment guidelines. Global attention on cannabis-based therapies is increa ..read more

Full spectrum: what does it mean?
Vermont Organic Science
by Joe Payack

The term “Full Spectrum CBD” is mentioned a lot. What does it mean, how’s it made, and how is it different from CBD isolate? Well, isolate, as I’ve talked about previously, is simply pure CBD. GW pharma sells their isolate as Epidiolex (with the blessing of the FDA) for tens of thousand dollars a year. This is a travesty, since a year’s supply of isolate on the open market is about 10 times cheaper than the “approved” GW isolate. Since GW has paid their fees, and jumped through the FDA hoops, they have a monopoly on a natural plant derived compound. The price they charge is unconscionable, and ..read more
