Phil Mickelson was hoping to become the first pro golfer to win his first three tournaments on any American tour. But a double bogey on the watery ninth hole basically ended any chances to win this years Champions Tour Cologuard Classic, at Tucson National. Kevin Sutherland was able to shake off the cold and wind to shoot a 4 under par 69 and take the Conquistador helmet, emblematic of the winner of the last 60 professional men’s tournaments in Tucson. Sutherland had to come back from a four shot deficit to beat a dejected Mike Weir, who had bogeys on two of his last three holes. Sutherland sa ..read more

“The show must go on”, at least that’s what they’re saying. Both the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and the Cologuard Classic say they are going ahead with the February tournaments as scheduled. The major golf tours had to take a month off during the height of the COVID 19 scare, and since then have been mostly playing in front of crowds of people made up of adjacent homeowners and friends and family of the golfers. Most serious golfers have a dream about winning a meaningful tournament. One where your name is announced on the first tee, and you’re handed one of those big checks after you sink the winning putt. Southern Arizona has dozens of outstanding teaching professionals. When you sit down and talk to most of them, many were competitive golfers from the time they were in high school, and just wanted to parlay their love of the game into a lifelong career. There are two local pro’s who came to the game late…but mastered their craft in a hurry, and now are both at the top of their field. Bobby Saavedra grew up playing the guitar. In fact, he wanted to be a rock star. But somewhere along the way he took up golf, realized he was good at it…and thought, at 27, he’d take a stab at becoming a PGA Profe ..read more
