All Good Things etc: Leaving Party 2024 Edition

It's that time of year again when it's worth having a look at who might be leaving at the end of the season. I've also collaborated with a fellow Edinburgh fan who has his finger on the pulse of contracts, rumours and the English game, so we’ll propose a few names that might fill the gaps left by any of those leavers. We haven’t suggested anyone who isn’t SQ because in this soon to be post S6 era the SRU have made it clear that has to be the exception and in due course an actual number will be imposed. Edinburgh’s non SQ quota looks like being no more than 4 for the upcoming season dependin ..read more

Slow Coach or no coach?

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe?   So the season is almost at an end and with just the league finals to go, Edinburgh, who have known since at least 24th February 2023, and probably even earlier, that they needed a new head coach for the 2023-2024 season are still rudderless. Or are they? Here at Burgh Watch HQ we, (well me) have put our best (only) investigator on the job and have added 2 +2 and come up with 1872. Here's the theory (crackpot idea), Edinburgh have agreed a deal for a new head coach already but because the man they have selected is currently contracted to a country who w ..read more

Red faced at Scarlets. 10 things we learned about Edinburgh after this defeat
The Burgh Watch

Our on field ability to adapt to circumstances is not good. You’ll have heard that the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Well that’s exactly what we did at every ruck for the first 50 minutes of this game. I bet even Scarlets couldn’t believe we didn’t mix it up in this area to try and keep Lousi guessing. The same could be said about our ability to prevent turnovers at the ruck. Perhaps a few where we committed a few more to it to make Scarlets think differently next time. Altogether we were too predictable in these facet ..read more

Breaking up is hard to do: The Leaving Party 2023

Signing season is upon us. Edinburgh have already re-upped on Ben Vellacott and Emiliano Boffelli with the latter being confirmed as signing for another two years taking his stay at Edinburgh to 2025. Vellacott’s deal was described as being ‘multi-year’ which most of us would predict as being 3 years. Only a few days later Edinburgh confirmed that they had secured the services of Munster standoff Ben Healy, in a much predicted move, for the beginning of season 2023-2024 and confirmed it as a 2 year deal. So a couple there with actual lengths in actual numbers but most of the squad d ..read more

So far so good or could be better: an early season assessment.

The Autumn internationals are upon us and that can mean only one thing. No, not the re-emergence from hibernation of the event tourists who are still wondering why Greig Laidlaw isn’t in the Scotland team but the end of the first block of URC Games and the chance to look back and see where we are on the grand scale and ponder on how the rest might go. In summary, Played 7, won 4, lost 3 and we are fifth in the URC table. A couple of teams have played only 6 games but even had those postponed games happened we would still be fifth. Sharks, however, have only played 5 games and with 2 BP win ..read more

The Return of The Prodigal?

The situation at Worcester Warriors is grim. Players and staff may lose their livelihood and for  some of the aspiring youngsters at the club this may mean the end of their dreams. The caretaker has been turfed out of his on site home. Grim. There is no better way to describe it.  As this situation has unfolded rumour has abounded about what will happen to the Scottish players at Worcester. Mainly this has focussed on Duhan and to a slightly lesser extent, Suzz and occasionally someone remembers that Murray McCallum falls into this category. The rumour mill suggested initi ..read more

Pride or Disappointment?
The Burgh Watch

There was a lot said about pride in the wake of Edinburgh’s defeat to Bulls on Saturday. In Mike Blair’s post match reaction piece, he used a variation of that word 3 times. Huge pride. It was an outstanding effort.   The pride we spoke about was there throughout the game. proud of the effort the boys put in today It’s hard to disagree with the use of that word especially in the way the day panned out. We lost Blair Kinghorn just before kick off, Jaco shortly after and then Gilco ended up in the bin as a result of the number of penalties we had given away in the opening ..read more

Edinburgh V Dragons: The Moments That Counted
The Burgh Watch

In the early stages of the match Edinburgh seemed a little pedestrian and inaccurate. Before the opening 11 minutes had elapsed we had conceded 3 penalties, lost a lineout, threw an incomplete pass and were 0-6 down.  We even saw BBM drop a high ball which is unheard of and shortly after that Mark Bennett missed a fairly long range penalty effort. The centre charged down the Dragons drop out but in the fall out from that Edinburgh were penalised. At that point It felt like it was going to be one of those nights.  The first key moment of the game came with Vellacotts snipe a few mi ..read more

The Pre-season Effect
The Burgh Watch

Pre-season games are a bit like someone letting one rip on a public bus. It happened but for the most part nobody mentions it. Later you might say, “jeez someone farted on the bus yesterday and it was ripe” but apart from that novelty value you soon forget it ever happened. Pre-season fixtures are on most clubs' websites going back a couple of years but after that they kind of drop off a cliff. Regular games - records go back more than 10 years. Tries - don’t count in stats unless scored in competitive matches Appearances - aren’t noted until there's something at stake. But for a man who ..read more
