Roscoe Hightower Jr., professor of marketing at historically Black Florida A&M University, passed away unexpectedly on April 4. He was 58 years old. Dr. Hightower’s career in academia began in 1997 as an assistant professor of marketing with the University of Akron in Ohio. He first joined the faculty at Florida A&M University in 2000 as an assistant professor of marketing and was promoted to full professor in 2012. An anonymous donor has gifted $20 million to historically Black Tuskegee University in Alabama. O. Jerome Green, president of Shorter College, passed away unexpectedly on April 8 at the age of 69. In 2012, Green became the forty-fifthth president of Shorter College, a private, faith-based, historically Black two-year college in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Under his leadership, Shorter College experienced record-breaking enrollment and graduation rates, created new academic programs, and established the STEM Center for Academic Excellence. Federal Report Uncovers Lack of Faculty Diversity and Delay in Federal Discrimination Complaint Processing

A recent report from the United States Government Accountability Office has documented a large underrepresentation of Black faculty members in higher education. The same report also revealed a frequent delay by the Department of Education when referring discrimination complaints to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Christopher Span has been appointed dean of the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University in New Jersey, effective July 1. Dr. Span currently serves as a professor of education policy, organization, and leadership at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A new study led by Xiaolong Hou, a graduate student at the University of Georgia, has examined the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among Black and White communities across the United States in an effort to further analyze health disparities between the two populations. Corrie Fountain, associate provost for faculty affairs at Georgia State University, has been selected to serve as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia. Study Finds African Americans Own a Significant Portion of Uninsured U.S. Homes

A new report from the Consumer Federation of America has found over six million Americans own uninsured homes, approximately 7.4 percent of all United States homeowners. Black homeowners are disproportionately impacted by the lack of housing insurance. Some 11 percent of African American homeowners do not have insurance for their properties compared to 6 percent of White American homeowners.
