Right now is Carnival of Basel, 19.-21. february. Have a look: Carnival of Basel - Wikipedia Die Basler Fasnacht – immaterielles Kulturerbe der Menschheit During Carnival or what we call „Fastnacht“ a special dish is served, „Basler Käsewähe“. It is a kind of Quiche mixed with Swiss cheese fondue. I grew up on the frontier to Switzerland, so this Basler Käsewähe is familiar to me and brings back good memories. Ingredients 220g flour 100g lard or frozen butter... Read more ..read more

Purchased on release and stored in Seckfords and then in Eurocave. Rich red plum, stewed raspberry and blackcurrant nose. There is a really nice perfume initially which grows darker as the wine gets more air. Rich and round palate or dark plum, earth, herbs and some perfumed red fruit and touches of leather. This wine feels very primary but doesn’t feel as if it has the precision or concentration of cooler vintages. It’s warm and appealing. The finish is medium length and mirrors the... Vins de Vienne - any thoughts?

Just looking for a bit of advice as I’m not familiar with their wines. I know it’s a joint venture between three of the big Rhône growers so that does give me some reassurance. I’m about to put in for a few things from the WS Rhône EP offer (and apologies to Gareth who’s probably sick of me going back and forth on this ) and I’m settled on a case of 3 of the Hermitage Alexandrins (white) and a case of the Cuilleron St Joseph Blanc. I’m a bit stuck with my Condrieu choice. I am thinking of... Read more ..read more

Pandemonium at O'Brien's Pub!

This is something you hardly see anymore, post-COVID, but every year in February, Russian River Brewing Co. out of Northern California release their Pliny the Younger DIPA (10.25%). They release a few kegs, have a handful of bottles on-site and that's your lot until next year. O'Brien's in San Diego, is one of the very few pubs to get kegs of PTY and even then, they are rationed out. Today, they had a keg tapping at 4.00pm, so I got there at 3.00pm and got the very last seat in the house... Read more ..read more

Tonight it's a half bottle of Domaine Gagey/Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er cru Clos des Guettes 2009. This would make admirable ammunition for the Jadot-doubters I will readily admit - even at fifteen years old it is recalcitrant, gummy, closed in on itself and essentially mysterious. The nose does give off some attractive smoky cherry fruit together with a streak of green, but on the palate it is a Gordian knot of complex, but stubbornly hermetic flavours. The wine is quite... Austrian Reds Advice

Off for a ski week to a hotel with a fairly extensive list and looking for any tips on Austrian reds (whites I’m on top of, pretty much). My preconceptions are - Blaufrankirsch is the go-to grape here and has more about it in terms of heft and flavour than the other main indigenous red grapes St Laurent (similar to PN) and Zweigelt (similar to Gamay) - Actual Pinot Noir is on the up in Austria - The cuvées (blends) tend to be bit a bit glossy and international Not looking for trophy... It's official: I don't like them. Shared a 1er cru with my father who was distinctly unimpressed. There are exceptions - Domaine de L'Arlot - but this is turning in dispiriting/downbeat vintage ..read more
