Back in the late seventies my buddy's sporting goods store I worked in held a big buck contest, the winning criteria would be determined by dressed weight. If I remember right we had 19 entries, there were some beauties entered, most of the Deer entered came in the mid 180s including one giant Doe The deer that won was taken from the Cicero Swamp out by Syracuse and he weighed 193 lbs. You hear a lot about 200 lb Deer dressed but there are not many out there and we did not get a single one. Al ..read more

I wonder how many of you keep a log of your hunts. Years ago, (1982) I chose to use an Excel spreadsheet to record my hunting activities. How many of you keep some kind of hunting log as a way of recording the details and memories of your hunts. I chose a spreadsheet because of the analytical capabilities.   Hunting Log Spreadsheet From 1982 through 2010, I kept a massive spreadsheet that recorded and analyzed every stand ever created in my hunting area around the valley and hill top (114 different stands). It takes in a huge amount of acreage and a massive amount of individual hunts. Fro ..read more

Broad daylight, and the deer have checked the calendar and the hunting regulations and are once again comfortable grazing in the front yard again. How on Earth do they figure out when to come out from deep cover. How do they know so quickly that hunting season is over and that the human scent all around my house is no longer something to fear?  They look good. Everyone has got all their legs, and they are still rolling in fat ..read more

"I grew up deer hunting with no trail camera or cellphone. I climbed up in a wooden ladder stand or you sit on the ground with your back against the tree. You shot the first buck you seen , be it a spike or 8 point. There was no ”target buck”. No social media shaming. You drug it out by hand unless you were rich enough to afford a 3 wheeler. You took it usually to a country store and checked it in. Always some old hunters gathered around the tailgate congratulating you. Those were some of the best days I ever had hunting! I feel sorry for the people who will never experience this."   Th ..read more
