I usually prefer fantasy to sci-fi, but that's only because I've been reading fantasy since I was ... *thinks* ... about 7 or 8? I guess my parents thought I'd grow out of it. Ah, well. So, anyway: about 7-8 years ago, I realised there were all kinds of categories under the general 'fantasy'... Question from a not-quite-newbie-to-sci-fi (but slightly confused ..read more

Human-Centric Stories in Science Fiction

Why is it so common in science fiction to focus on the human? Or entities based on humans? I am guilty of this in my own writing as well, there aliens merely exist as either allies or enemies to a dominantly human society. That society has aliens within it as citizens, but not in any key... Human-Centric Stories in Science Fiction ..read more

In my fictional universe energy disruption weapons are very prevalent. I call them that because they can disrupt energy shields, nano machine clouds, and most things powered by energy. However, should I rather use the more common Electromagnetic Pulse term for this? I am a bit unsure of the... Energy Disruption vs Electromagnetic Pulse ..read more

Does a world that revolves around giant Household weapons sound too much like aot?

I have been trying to come up with a sort of "magic system" to accompany my world of beasts for the longest time, but now realize it may sound too much like aot, as the whole gist of these items is for fighting and conquest. Not to mention the themes in my story dealing with revenge and... Does a world that revolves around giant Household weapons sound too much like aot ..read more

Engines, armour, and command bridges.

Why is it so prevalent in Science Fiction that the engines are visible (and often with a jet cone or some such), the armour of the ships are so thin that firefights aren't allowed inside the ships, and that the command bridges are seperated by a thin window into space? Anyone knows? I can... Engines, armour, and command bridges ..read more

Sci-Fi Setting Preliminary Troubleshooting

So I've been thinking about a science fiction setting for some time. It's supposed to be a rather soft space-opera/science fantasy style, although I'm going to try not to overtly hand-wave or ignore reasonable explanations for why things work that they do. (For example, I'm not going to have... Sci-Fi Setting Preliminary Troubleshooting ..read more
